MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lady Railsplitters (3-8-1, 2-5-1 SAC) fell to Mars Hill University (5-8-1, 3-6 SAC) in heartbreaking fashion Wednesday by a score of 1-0 in double overtime. Aleonya Hunter scored the game's lone goal in the 108th minute to clinch a Lion victory. The loss ended a three-game unbeaten streak for the Lady Railsplitters.
With less than three minutes remaining and the game looking destined to end in a scoreless tie, Julia Johnson fed Hunter over the middle. She beat a defender and created separation for a clean shot past a diving
Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, Mich.).
The win was the Lions' first in the series in Mars Hill since 1995, which snapped a seven-game Lady Railsplitter win streak. It also marked Lincoln Memorial's first regular season overtime loss in 10 matches dating back to 2013.
Mars Hill came close to taking an early lead in the second minute, but a shot from Ashlyn Perkins hit the crossbar. The Lady Railsplitters settled down afterward and played a strong first half. They held an 8-6 shot advantage over the Lions at halftime, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Lincoln Memorial also survived four corner kick opportunities while not attempting one themselves.
The Lions responded with a stronger second half and outshot Lincoln Memorial 8-3, but the Lady Railsplitters still held a 7-5 shots on goal advantage through 90 minutes. But Mars Hill attempted three shots that found their way on goal, including the game winner, to take the overall edge in that category as well.
Melissa Carpenter (Jacksonville, Fla.) led the Lady Railsplitter attack with three shots and two on goal.
Courtney Boyd (Chattanooga, Tenn.) also had both of her shots on goal.
Lundy turned in another strong performance in goal. Her eight saves were one short of tying a career high. After a slow start to the year, she has now allowed exactly one goal in four consecutive games and has compiled a .870 save percentage over that span.
The Lady Railsplitters continue their SAC schedule Saturday, October 22 when they welcome Anderson University to the LMU Soccer Complex. Live stats and video links will be available online at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
