HARROGATE, Tenn. – For the second time in four days, the Lincoln Memorial women's soccer team (3-9-1, 2-6-1 SAC) suffered a disheartening overtime loss to a conference foe. This time Anderson University (8-5-1, 5-4-1 SAC) scored with 12 seconds left in the first overtime to clinch a 3-2 victory and spoil the Lady Railsplitters' home finale.
Both teams struggled to muster much of an attack in the first half as they played to a scoreless tie. Anderson held a slight 6-4 shot advantage, including 3-1 lead in shots on goal. The Trojans were held shotless until the 20
th minute, while the Lady Railsplitters were held without a shot on goal for the final 30 minutes of the half.
Three seniors –
Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, Mich.),
Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario) and
Marissa Kiernan (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) - were honored at halftime for Senior Day.
The rest of the Lady Railsplitters began the second half inspired from the event.
Melissa Carpenter (Jacksonville, Fla.) found the back of the net just five minutes into the half to give Lincoln Memorial a 1-0 advantage.
Caroline Souza (São Paulo, Brazil) sent a through ball to Carpenter, whose shot beat the Anderson goalkeeper to the bottom left corner.
Looking for a spark on offense, Anderson substituted Lyssa Engle into the game in the 63
rd minute. The move paid off quickly, as she scored on a deflection to tie the game at one in the 71
st minute. Tina Shakes had the ball deflected from her, but Engle was in the right position to recover and blast the ball into the net for her fifth score of the year.
The Lady Railsplitters responded just over three minutes later to regain the lead. Souza received a long cross into the box from
Jacquelyn Christoph (Eatonville, Wash.), who then turned and beat a Trojan defender before finishing her team-leading fourth goal of the year. Christoph recorded her first career assist on the play.
Anderson once again held tough and scored the equalizer five minutes later in the 79
th minute. Shakes, always a threat to score, received a long pass from Megan Foster to put her in a one-on-one situation with Lundy. She flicked the ball over Lundy for her 10
th goal of the season to give the Trojans new life.
Both teams recorded just one shot in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but neither found their way on goal. For the third time in seven days and fourth consecutive game, the Lady Railsplitters headed to overtime. Anderson held a 15-11 shot advantage at the end of regulation.
Anderson controlled most of the overtime period and fired off three shots on goal, including the game-winner. Carpenter took the only Lady Railsplitter shot of the period, but her shot harmlessly rolled wide. Lundy stopped the first two Trojan attempts, but Megan Foster curved a shot into the left corner in the 100
th minute to deny a second overtime period.
Lundy made a career-high 10 saves in her final performance at the LMU Soccer Complex. She has played every minute in goal over the past five game—including seven overtime periods—with a .841 save percentage over that span.
The Lady Railsplitters conclude the final week of their regular-season schedule Wednesday, October 25 at Carson-Newman and Saturday, October 28 at Catawba. Live stats and video links will be available online at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
