Carson-Newman clips Lady Railsplitters 1-0

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial University gave a spirited effort on the road against South Atlantic Conference rival Carson-Newman but ultimately fell short by a score of 1-0 on Tuesday night in Jefferson City, Tenn. The Lady Railsplitters (3-10-1, 2-7-1 SAC) held strong defensively amongst a barrage of shots by the Eagles (12-3-1, 7-2-1 SAC) but couldn't capitalize on any of their own chances in their penultimate match of the 2016 season.

Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, Mich.) continued her exceptional play of late and had the best game of her career in stopping 15 Carson-Newman shots, which shattered her previous career high of 10 saves set just three days ago. Her 15 saves were the most in a game by an LMU goalkeeper since 2009.

Despite outshooting the Lady Railsplitters 13-1 in the opening half, the high-scoring Eagles could not solve Lundy. They also attempted six shots on goal and five corner kicks to the Lady Railsplitters' zero in both categories The Eagles ranked first in the SAC in most offensive categories entering the game.

Carson-Newman turned up its offensive attack even more in the second half as they fired off nine more shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the Lincoln Memorial defense continued to hold. They pressured attackers well and denied many clean chances.

Melissa Carpenter (Jacksonville, Fla.) escaped on a breakaway chance in the 53rd minute, but Eagle goalkeeper Jacqueline Burns knocked the shot away. She attempted another shot just one minute later, but that one harmlessly rolled wide.

Carson-Newman finally broke through in the 64th minute. Varin Ness received a through ball across the middle from Helen Seed to get behind the Lady Railsplitter defense. She had space to chip the ball over Lundy into the top corner. Ness continues to be a thorn in the side to Lincoln Memorial, as she has scored the game-winning goal in all three career games against the Lady Railsplitters.

Two of the top three goal scorers in the SAC were held at bay in Lauren Wade and Julianne Herrity. They combined for 15 shots—seven on goal—but could not get one past Lundy. SAC assist leader Holly Talbut-Smith was also kept off the scoresheet.

The Eagles clamped down on defense afterward and prevented the Lady Railsplitters from even attempting a shot for the final 29 minutes. They finished outshooting Lincoln Memorial 31-5, including a 16-3 edge shots on goal.

The Lady Railsplitters conclude their regular season schedule Friday, October 28 at Catawba. Live stats and video links will be available online at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
