Railsplitters wrap up regular season at Catawba on Friday

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Railsplitters (10-5, 6-4 SAC) will attempt to clinch a top-four seed for the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Championship on Friday as they tidy up the regular-season schedule against the Catawba Indians (9-6, 6-4 SAC) at 5:30 p.m. in Salisbury, N.C.

Notes on the Railsplitters:

-Lincoln Memorial picked up its fifth win in its last six appearances on the pitch with a 1-0 triumph at Carson-Newman on Tuesday night in Jefferson City, Tenn. Victor Peres (Brasilia, Brazil) tallied the game-winning goal in the 28th minute off of a free kick, while goalkeeper August Ahlin (Stockholm, Sweden) made a career-high eight saves, including five in the second half, to post his third shutout of the season.

-That win over Carson-Newman put the Railsplitters into a two-way tie with Catawba for fourth place in the SAC standings, setting up an interesting scenario for Friday's match. Wingate and Tusculum are already locked into the No. 1 and 2 seeds for the SAC Championship, but Lenoir-Rhyne is in third place with 19 points, while Lincoln Memorial and Catawba are tied for fourth place with 18 points. The Railsplitters defeated L-R back on September 24, meaning that a win over Catawba paired with an L-R loss at Newberry on Saturday would give Lincoln Memorial the No. 3 seed. However, if Lenoir-Rhyne wins, the winner of the LMU-Catawba match will host the loser next Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the SAC Championship. A tie would award Catawba the No. 4 seed by virtue of its win over Tusculum.

-With his goal against C-N, Peres has scored in five consecutive matches dating back to October 10th's win at Newberry. He is the first LMU player to score a goal in five straight matches since Mario Pinto opened the 2013 campaign by scoring six goals over a five-match span. Peres has seven goals and four assists this season, ranking sixth in the SAC in goals and eighth in points.

-Ahlin hasn't allowed a goal since the 55th minute of the Mars Hill match on October 19, compiling over 215 scoreless minutes over that span. The Stockholm, Sweden native is fourth in the SAC with a 1.14 goals against average, while his .726 save percentage is the eighth-best mark in the league.

-With their win on Tuesday, the Railsplitters picked up their 10th victory of the season, notching 10-plus wins for the second consecutive year. A win on Friday would give Lincoln Memorial its most wins since the 2013 team went 13-4-1 and suffered a 1-0 loss to Anderson in the title game of the SAC Championship.

Notes on the Indians:

-Catawba has been in a funk of late. After winning six straight matches from September 24 to October 12, the Indians have lost three of their last four matches, including a 3-1 setback against Belmont Abbey on Tuesday. Prior to that, Catawba handed nationally-ranked Tusculum a 3-0 beatdown in Greeneville, Tenn.

-The Indians are ranked ninth in the SAC in shots per game with 11.5, but most of their attempts are high quality, as Catawba ranks second in the league in shots on goal percentage (.468) and shot percentage (.150), which measures the percentage of shot attempts that go for goals. Overall, Catawba has piled up 15 goals in SAC play, ranking fourth in the league in that department.

-Catawba has been vulnerable on the defensive end, allowing 1.51 goals per game, which ranks eighth in the 12-team SAC. For the season, the Indians have been outshot 206-173.

-Daniele Proch is the unquestioned leader of the Catawba attack, as the freshman striker has accounted for seven goals and seven assists on 29 shots and 19 shots on goal. No other player has more than nine points for the Indians this season, as Tim Frederik-Lange and Ian Orr have tallied four goals and an assist apiece. Jack Pettett has two goals and two assists.

-Sophomore Joe Gonzalez has played the bulk of the minutes in goal for Catawba this season, but senior Christian Watts has started the last two matches. Gonzalez has a 1.22 goals against average with a .727 save percentage and 24 saves in eight starts this season. Watts' numbers are nearly identical. He has a 1.10 goals against average and a .727 save percentage as well in four appearances.

-The Indians are 3-3 at home this season, with all three of those losses coming in succession to Anderson, Wingate and Belmont Abbey. Catawba hasn't won a home match since defeating Brevard 1-0 on October 1.

Series History:

-The Railsplitters are 12-6 all-time against Catawba and have dominated the series of late, winning 10 of the last 11 meetings. Lincoln Memorial is 8-2 at home against the Indians, but just 4-3 in Salisbury, though.

-LMU pulled off a 3-2 win over Catawba in the 2015 regular-season finale. Danilo da Silva (Campinas, Brazil) had two goals, while Henrique Rezek (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) notched the game-winner in the 59th minute.

-The Railsplitters' only loss against Catawba since 2007 came in 2014's trip to Salisbury, as the Indians defeated Lincoln Memorial 1-0.
