Lady Railsplitters make quick work of Cobras in 3-0 sweep

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters nearly led from the first serve to the final point in a 3-0 sweep of the Coker Cobras on Saturday afternoon at Mary Mars Gymnasium. Coker (12-14, 4-13 SAC) didn't score more than 16 points in a single set, as Lincoln Memorial (21-4, 15-2 SAC) won its fourth straight match and remained atop the South Atlantic Conference standings by scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-15.

Just hours after arguably the most significant regular-season victory in program history with Friday night's thrilling 3-2 triumph over Wingate, the Lady Railsplitters took care business against the Cobras with an efficient attack that produced 35 kills on just 90 attempts.

Samantha Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) led all players with 11 error-free kill on 19 attempts, good for a gaudy .579 attack percentage. She was the only LMU player with more than five kills in the match, but seven other Lady Railsplitters finished with at least two kills. Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) had five, while Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) and Tone Gill (Nashville, Tenn.) had four apiece. Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) collected 28 assists, nine digs and three blocks, while Erica Whiteaker (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) led LMU with 12 digs.

As a unit, the Lady Railsplitters made life difficult on the Cobras by producing 16 block assists and two solo blocks. Gill headed up that effort with five blocks.

It was a tough day for the Coker attack, which mustered only 25 kills with 27 errors, finishing the match with a -.020 attack percentage. That's the second time this season that Lincoln Memorial has forced an opponent into more errors than kills and the first since Virginia-Wise hit -.061 on September 2.

Olivia Veith was the lone Cobra to produce with any consistency, churning out eight kills on a .312 clip. Sierra Harvey chipped in five kills, while Alexis Berles had four. Christen Bragg contributed 15 assists and seven digs, while Kara Overholt led all players with 14 scoops.

The Lady Railsplitters used a strong defensive effort to dominant the opening set, as Coker finished with just six kills and 11 attack errors in the frame. Lincoln Memorial led from start to finish and won the first five points of the set, a flurry that was paced by two kills from Sam Cash. The Cobras trimmed the deficit to 6-3 on an LMU error, but the Lady Railsplitters used 4-0 and 5-0 runs to increase their lead to 18-6. Kills from Kayla Kidney (Chandler, Ariz.) and Brock completed the 25-11 victory for the Lady Railsplitters.

The Lady Railsplitters led wire to wire in the second set as well, but the Cobras made life much more difficult on the home team. Lincoln Memorial led 5-2 following a Sam Cash kill, but a Bingle ace evened the score at 7-7. The Lady Railsplitters pulled back ahead 10-7 on a Coker miscue, however, the Cobras answered with a 3-0 run of its own. The two teams traded 3-0 runs once more to even the score at 13-13. That's where Lincoln Memorial took control, though, winning eight of the next nine rallies to build a commanding 21-14 advantage. Sam Cash had two kills over that stretch. A kill by Holland wrapped up LMU's 25-16 win.

The Cobras established their first lead of the match in the third set, pulling ahead 6-2 on a Taylor du Bray service ace. That lead was short-lived, though, as the Lady Railsplitters went on an 11-1 run over the next passage of play to take a 13-7 lead. Coker remained within striking distance after that flurry, closing the gap to 17-14 on an ace. However, the Lady Railsplitters ended the set on an 8-1 run, capped by a Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) kill, which clinched the straight-sets sweep with a 25-15 win.

The Lady Railsplitters are back in action on Tuesday, November 1, when they head to Greeneville, Tenn. for a SAC match against arch-rival Tusculum. That match is set to get underway at 7 p.m.

Quick Hits
