Cash sisters push Lady Railsplitters past Lenoir-Rhyne in four sets

HICKORY, N.C. -- Senior setter Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) and sophomore right side Samantha Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) powered the Lady Railsplitters to a four-set win (25-22, 25-14, 23-25, 25-22) over the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Shuford Gymnasium in Hickory, N.C.

Lincoln Memorial (12-2, 9-1 SAC) outhit Lenoir-Rhyne (5-12, 3-7 SAC) 60-48 and produced a .195 attack percentage to continue the program's best-ever start to SAC play and snap a six-game losing streak against the Bears, who fell to 1-5 in their last six appearances. The victory also pushed the Lady Railsplitters' winning streak to four and marked the program's first against Lenoir-Rhyne since 2012.

Sam Cash led the Lady Railsplitters with 16 kills on a .405 attack percentage while chipping in eight digs, two blocks, four assists and a service ace. Her sister Abby tallied 48 assists, 14 digs, six kills, two blocks and two aces. Sophomore Danielle Ged (Smyrna, Tenn.) matched a career-high mark with 12 kills on a .310 attack percentage to go along with three digs and three blocks, while Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) also finished with 12 kills and 14 digs. Erica Whiteaker (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) led the Lady Railsplitters with 19 digs.

Two straight kills from Abby Cash pushed the Lady Railsplitters out to a 7-5 lead early in the first set. Shortly after that, the Lady Railsplitters fell into a 9-8 hole thanks to back-to-back attack errors, but LMU won four of the next five points to pull back ahead 12-10. The Lady Railsplitters would never trail again, but the set would be tied on four different occasions over the ensuing passage. However, a kill by Abby Cash and an L-R attack error broke the final tie and made it 20-18 in favor of the visitors. A kill from Sam Cash and another error by the Bears clinched LMU's 25-22 win.

The Lady Railsplitters controlled the pace from start to finish in the second frame. The Bears held a short-lived 5-4 lead early in the set, but Lincoln Memorial gained command of the board by reeling off a 10-0 run on the serve of Bristol Snider (Chattanooga, Tenn.). Ged had three kills during that flurry, while Brock and Sam Cash also chipped in a kill apiece. Lenoir-Rhyne was unable to recover from that avalanche, as two kills from Sam Cash capped the 25-14 win.

The third set saw the Lady Railsplitters produce 17 kills, their most in any of the four frames, but Lenoir-Rhyne collected 15 kills on a .255 clip to avoid the sweep. Neither team established a lead larger than two points until a kill by Emily Steele put the Bears ahead 16-13. From there, Lincoln Memorial steadily chipped away at the deficit, using kills from Ged and Lindsey Nartker (New Carlisle, Ohio) to take a 22-21 lead. However, the Bears won four of the last five points to wrap up the 25-23 win.

The fourth set was another back-and-forth affair. The Lady Railsplitters led 5-2 early, but the Bears controlled the next passage of play to assume a 10-7 cushion. It was then Lincoln Memorial's turn to answer, as the Lady Railsplitters rallied off nine of the next 12 points to grab a 16-14 lead on a kill by Brock. The Lady Railsplitters led the rest of the way, but wouldn't completely gain control until two kills from Nartker and one from Ged made it 21-17. The Bears pulled within one late in the frame before two miscues handed Lincoln Memorial the match-clinching 25-22 victory.

Jaclyn Denny and Katrina Samuels led Lenoir-Rhyne with 12 kills apiece, while Brandi Thomas and Emily Steele had six each. Jessica Funk paced the Bears with 40 assists to go along with eight digs, while Ashley Markland led all players with 25 scoops.

The Lady Railsplitters will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Brevard, N.C. to face the Brevard Tornados. First serve in that contest is set for 2 p.m.
