Notes on the Lady Railsplitters:
Â
-Lincoln Memorial will look to get back on track after dropping successive matches for the first time this season, as the Lady Railsplitters suffered a 3-0 loss at Catawba last Friday before falling in four sets at Queens on Saturday. That briefly knocked Lincoln Memorial out of first place in the SAC, however, losses by Queens and Wingate have put the Lady Railsplitters back in a three-way tie atop the standings with two matches to go in the regular season.
Â
-Offensively, the Lady Railsplitters did more than enough to win this past weekend, compiling 46 kills on a .244 clip against Catawba and 58 kills with a .272 mark against Queens. However, that wasn't enough to overcome a pair of shaky defensive efforts. Catawba notched 51 kills on a .255 attack percentage, while Queens had 67 kills on a .272 mark. That was the most kills by an LMU opponent in a four-set match since October of 2013.
Â
-Lincoln Memorial will honor its five seniors -
Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio),
Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio),
Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.),
Jamie Jehne (Hollywood, Fla.) and
Bristol Snider (Chattanooga, Tenn.) - during a pre-match ceremony on Friday night.
Â
-Lincoln Memorial, Wingate and Queens are all tied atop the SAC standings with 16-4 league records, while Newberry is two games back of that trio at 14-6. The very real possibility exists that all three teams finish the regular season tied for first place in the league. Wingate - the 10-time defending SAC champs - hosts Mars Hill and Tusculum this weekend, while Queens travels to Anderson and Newberry. LMU, Wingate and Queens would share the SAC title if all three win out this weekend, while postseason seeds will be determined by head-to-head tiebreakers.
Â
-
Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) crested the 300-kill mark for the season this past weekend, as she compiled 20 kills on a .472 attack percentage in the loss at Queens. That was Holland's third 20-kill performance of the season. The Columbia, S.C. native ranks sixth in the SAC in kills per set with 3.09 and total kills with 306.
Â
Notes on Lenoir-Rhyne:
Â
-The Bears make their way to Harrogate riding a three-game winning streak that includes back-to-back wins over first-place teams. Lenoir-Rhyne swept Wingate in straight sets last Saturday before pulling off a 3-1 win over Queens on Tuesday, playing a key role in the three-way tie that currently exists at the top of the SAC standings.
Â
-Lenoir-Rhyne, who is hitting just .156 as a team this season, surpassed the .200 percent threshold in those wins over Wingate and Queens. The Bears compiled 40 kills on a .216 clip against Wingate before tallying 55 kills on a .205 mark to go along with 79 digs against Queens.
Â
-Prior to this current three-game winning streak, the Bears had lost four straight matches, including a 3-1 setback to ninth-place Mars Hill.
Â
-Junior outside hitter Brooke Redmond leads the Bears and ranks second in the SAC with 3.36 kills per set on a .178 attack percentage. Redmond is one of four L-R players averaging at least two kills per set along with Brandi Thomas (2.48), Emily Steele (2.28) and Katrina Samuels (2.04). Jessica Funk leads the Bears with 7.96 assists per set, while Kathryn Sizemore has chipped in 4.45. Ashley Markland paces L-R with 4.00 digs per set.
Â
-The Bears are 3-7 on the road this season. L-R has not won a road match since defeating Brevard in three sets on October 14, falling at Mars Hill, Anderson, Newberry and Catawba since that victory.
Â
Notes on Brevard:
Â
-The Tornados snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Coker. Prior to that victory, Brevard had won just two of its last 17 matches.
Â
-Brevard still has a lot to play for this weekend, as wins over Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman, who the Tornados play on Friday, could put Brevard in the SAC Tournament. The Tornados are currently in 10th place with a 5-15 mark, but eighth-place Tusculum is 7-13. The top eight teams in the final standings earn bids to the SAC Championship, while the top four hosts their respective quarterfinal round game.
Â
-The Tornados have been plagued by a lack of productivity and efficiency on offense, ranking eighth in the SAC in kills per set (11.66) and hitting percentage (.157). Opposing offenses have also had their way against Brevard, compiling 12.33 kills per set on a .215 attack percentage.
Â
-Freshman Callie Chappell leads Brevard with 3.04 kills per set, while senior Savannah Cox has contributed 2.50 on a team-best .269 attack percentage. Junior Rachel Ruble has also been productive with 2.24 kills per set. Erin Barr has put up 9.23 assists and 2.44 digs per set, while Aleksandra Vrvilo is ranked fourth in the SAC in digs per set with 5.37.
Â
-Brevard has struggled mightily on the road this season with a 2-9 mark. The Tornados have lost their last seven true road matches since defeating Mars Hill on its home court on September 17.
Â
Series History:
Â
-Lincoln Memorial and Lenoir-Rhyne are nearly dead even in the all-time series, but the Bears have a narrow 12-11 advantage heading into Friday night's match. The Lady Railsplitters had lost six straight to Lenoir-Rhyne, but snapped that streak with a 3-1 win in Hickory back on October 7.
Â
-The Lady Railsplitters are looking to snap a three-match home losing streak against Lenoir-Rhyne. Lincoln Memorial last beat the Bears in Mary Mars Gym in September of 2012.
Â
-In October 7th's 3-1 win at Lenoir-Rhyne, the Lady Railsplitters compiled 60 kills and hit .195 while limiting the Bears to just 48 kills.
Samantha Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) led all players with 16 kills, while Brock and
Danielle Ged (Smyrna, Tenn.) had 12 apiece. Jaclyn Denny and Katrina Samuels led L-R with 12 kills each.
Â
-The Lady Railsplitters are 22-0 all-time against Brevard with a perfect 10-0 mark inside of Mary Mars Gym. That includes a 3-1 win at Brevard back on October 8.
Â
-Two of Brevard's last three trips to Harrogate have required five sets. The Lady Railsplitters had to climb out of a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Tornados in last season's meeting at Mary Mars.
Â
-Lincoln Memorial defeated Brevard 3-1 back on October 8. The Lady Railsplitters had 63 kills on a .253 clip, but the Tornados hit .217 with 53 kills to keep relative pace. Brock had 16 kills to lead the Lady Railsplitters, while Chappell matched that mark for Brevard.Â
