HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Senior
Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) scored 17 points off of 7-of-12 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lady Railsplitters in a wire-to-wire 78-51 rout of USC Aiken Saturday afternoon in the SAC vs. Peach Belt Conference Challenge finale.
LMU opens up a season 2-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 season. It was also their second win in the series vs. Aiken, with the last win coming in the Tex Turner Arena in 1991.
Freshman
Sydney Duggins (Oliver Springs, Tenn.) added in 10 points, five rebounds and three assists to help the Lady Railsplitter cause.
USC Aiken was led by Jasmine Carter's 17 points, four rebounds and two blocks.Â
For the second game in a row,
Sydnie Anderson (Cleveland, Tenn.) scored the first basket of the game, this time on a driving layup with 9:10 left in the first quarter. A mid-range jumper by Carter a few seconds later tied the game at 2-2. LMU then surged out on a 21-10 run sparked by an offensive rebound and a putback by
Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) that put the Lady Railsplitters up 23-12 late in the period.Â
The second stanza saw LMU surge out to a 25 point lead on the back of 45 percent shooting from the field and 3-of-9 shooting from three-point range. They also held the Pacers to 17.6 percent shooting from the field and out-rebounded USC Aiken 18-8 in the period.
The second half was all LMU as they extended the lead out to as much as 32 points while never allowing the Pacers to get closer than 21 points down the stretch as they held on for the 78-51 victory.
The Lady Railsplitters had one of their most efficient offensive outings of the past few seasons as they scored on 43 of their 76 possessions while simultaneously holding the Pacers to only 29 scoring possessions out of 76 chances.
LMU looks to continue their winning ways as they make the short trip to Williamsburg, Kentucky for a Tuesday meeting with the University of the Cumberlands. It will be LMU's first appearance in the O. Wayne Rollins Center since a 74-67 win there in the 1996-97 season. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.Â
