HARROGATE, Tenn. – The 20
th-ranked Lady Railsplitters used a 16-2 first-quarter run to blow by Brevard for the 94-65 South Atlantic Conference victory Monday evening.
With the win, LMU improves to 9-0 on the season and 4-0 in SAC play. The nine game win-streak is the longest of the
Krystal Evans era and ties the 6
th longest winning streak of the modern era with the 1989-90 and 2000-2001 teams.
Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the team with 18 points off of 8-of-16 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 shooting from behind the three-point arc. She has now scored 13 or more points in six of LMU's nine games.
Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) had 16 points along with a team-high nine rebounds. Twins Rachel and
Emily Griffith (Oliver Springs, Tenn.) both had new career-highs as they had 13 points and 10 points, respectively. They also had three steals apiece. Freshman
Shermeria Quarles (Greenwood, S.C.) also had a pair of career highs as she had 8 points and six rebounds.
Brevard was led by Madison Lenox' 31-points and nine rebounds. Lenox, who became Brevard's all-time leading scorer this past Saturday, went 11-of-18 from the field, 1-of-5 from 3-point range and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Three other Tornados had seven points each.
LMU's pressure was a key factor as the Lady Railsplitters forced Brevard into 33 turnovers, which they converted into 36 points. They also scored 48 points in the paint to Brevard's 26. LMU also had their best shooting night of the season as they hit 52 percent (39-of-75) of their shots from the field.
LMU shot out to the early 4-0 lead off of layups by
Sydnie Anderson (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Pittman. Lenox, who scored all of Brevard's points but two in the first quarter, would cut the lead to two points on two occasions before a three-pointer by Pittman sparked a 16-2 run over the next 6:26 to pull out to a 22-6 lead. The Tornados would score the last four points of the quarter to cut the lead to 22-10 after one period.
The second quarter was a tale of runs as Brevard would cut the lead to 10 only to see the Lady Railsplitters score 10 unanswered points. The Tornados then scored seven straight only to see LMU slam the door on any more runs. LMU lead 44-30 at the half.
The third period saw LMU slowly extend the lead as their defense limited Brevard to only four free throws over the last 4:36 of the period. A
Dasia Maxwell (Knoxville, Tenn.) layup as time expired in the quarter gave LMU their largest lead to that point, 69-44.
In the fourth quarter, Coach Evans went to the deep LMU bench to close out the game. LMU's defense once again rose to the challenge, holding Brevard to only two baskets from the field and five free throws in the final 3:51 of the game.
The Lady Railsplitters will now have the rest of the week to concentrate on finals before they travel to Wingate for a key SAC contest on Dec. 14. The Bulldogs will enter the game with a 5-2 overall and a 3-1 SAC record. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and live stats and video links can be found on LMURailsplitters.com
