Quick Hits: -The Lady Railsplitters opened the 2016 campaign by suffering a 9-4 loss to Catawba as well as 6-5 and 9-3 losses to Armstrong State in last weekend's Pirate Classic. Errors were an issue over the course of the entire weekend, as Lincoln Memorial committed four total fielding blunders, including a two-out throwing error that allowed six unearned runs to score in the loss to Catawba. In the middle game of the Pirate Classic, the Lady Railsplitters rallied from a 5-3 deficit with a two-out, two-run single by
Savannah Couch (Colonial Heights, Va.) in the top of the seventh inning, but Armstrong State scored a walk-off win with a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth to send LMU home empty handed.
-Couch and freshman
Parker Brantley (Zebulon, N.C.) led the Lady Railsplitters offensively in the first weekend of the season. Brantley went 4-for-12 at the dish with an RBI and a double, while Couch was 4-for-7 with a team-high three RBIs. Lincoln Memorial produced 25 hits during their three-game stretch in Savannah, but only two went for extra bases.
Kelsie Hocutt (Wendell, N.C.) accounted for the other with a double.
-Both
Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) and
Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) will look to rebound from shaky performances on the mound last weekend. Smith made two starts, allowing 20 hits and 10 earned runs over 10 innings, while Taylor gave up two earned runs, walked four and allowed six hits in her 4.2 innings pitched. Freshman
Alicia Raymond (Cleveland, Tenn.) was the only one of LMU's four pitchers to not allow an earned run last weekend, as she surrendered three hits and one unearned run over 2.1 innings of relief. The Lady Railsplitters' pitching staff allowed at least 11 hits in two of the three games and gave up a .371 batting average.
-The Lady Railsplitters started the season 0-3 for the first time since 2013. They are looking to avoid an 0-4 start for the first time since 1999, when LMU lost seven of its first eight games before turning things around and finishing with a 33-22 overall record.
-Lincoln Memorial went a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts at the Pirate Classic. Five different players notched a stolen base to lead that effort.

Notes on the Opponents:-The two-time defending SIAC champion Tuskegee Golden Tigers fell to 0-7 on the season following a doubleheader sweep at West Alabama on Wednesday. Opponents are hitting .423 and reaching base at a .474 clip against the Golden Tigers, while the Tuskegee offense is hitting a mere .222 with a .276 on-base percentage. The Golden Tigers were no-hit by North Alabama on February 2 and held to just two hits in two other games.
-Young Harris is off to a 6-2 start that includes a doubleheader sweep of South Atlantic Conference foe Queens as well as wins over Tuskegee and North Alabama. The Mountain Lions boast a high-powered offensive attack that has put up at least 10 runs three times this season with a .325 batting average and a .434 slugging percentage through eight games. On the mound, Young Harris is led by Darby Stanford, who is 3-1 with a 0.51 earned run average and 16 strikeouts through 27.2 innings.

The Cougars' offense has yet to find its footing early in the season, though, as Columbus State is batting .229 and slugging .307. Darby Demarest is the only Columbus State pitcher with an ERA below 3.00, as she has yet to allow an earned run over five innings of work.
-McKenzie Fagioli leads Columbus State offensively with a .389 batting average, seven hits and seven RBIs. She is the only Cougar with at least 17 at-bats and a batting average above .300, as Kailey Boone is hitting .278, Katie White is batting .235 and Rachel Rhodes is hitting .118.
-The ninth-ranked Georgia College Bobcats improved to 6-0 last Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader from Anderson by scores of 5-2 and 3-1. They have outscored their opponents 40-7 this season while putting up a .357 team batting average and allowing a mere .177 clip. Georgia College's team earned run average is a miniscule 0.52, as three Bobcat pitchers have racked up 44 strikeouts in 40 innings.
-Four different players are hitting above .400 for the Bobcats with at least 15 at-bats to their credit. Faith Flanders is hitting .529 and slugging .824 with five doubles and nine RBIs.
