TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman attacker
Kyle Arcuri (Patchogue, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder
Adam Golia (Victoria, British Columbia) combined for eight goals and four assists to help the Railsplitters (2-0) defeat the North Greenville Crusaders (0-2) 12-7 and earn the first road win in program history on Wednesday night in Tigerville, S.C.
Â
In the first road trip of the 2016 campaign, Lincoln Memorial did something that it was unable to do in the program's inaugural season by securing a win on the road, ending an 0-6 drought outside of Harrogate. The Railsplitters also improved to 2-0 in the all-time series against North Greenville and built on top of a 13-8 victory in last season's meeting versus the Crusaders.
Â
Arcuri scored four goals and handed out two assists on five shots on goal, while Golia drove his season goal total to 10, which currently leads the South Atlantic Conference, by tallying four markers and dishing out two assists on a match-high 10 shot attempts.
Billy Kopsky (Smithtown, N.Y.) aided the Railsplitters' offensive effort by chipping in two goals and an assist.
Dylan Neisler (Detroit, Mich.) notched a goal and an assist on four shot attempts.
Â
The Railsplitters never trailed in the contest and nearly led wire-to-wire, but North Greenville stayed within striking distance for the majority of the match until Lincoln Memorial gained some separation in the third quarter.
Â
Lincoln Memorial pulled ahead 2-0 after Kopsky scored at the 13:18 mark and Arcuri tallied off a pass from
Frank Sergi (Indianapolis, Ind.) at the 7:23 mark of the opening quarter. But North Greenville drew the game back even at 2-2 following a goal from Hunter Burgett with a hair under five minutes left in the first quarter and a man-up goal from Drew Warren at the 10:55 mark of the second quarter.
Â
The Railsplitters reasserted a two-goal advantage with goals less than a minute apart in the middle portion of the second quarter. Golia notched an unassisted man-up score at 8:28, while Kopsky put in his second goal of the match 50 seconds later to make it a 4-2 game. However, the Crusaders countered by also scoring two goals less than a minute apart to even the game once more at 4-4.
Â
Conjuring up memories of the last-second goal at the end of the first half against Emmanuel, the Railsplitters would carry a 5-4 lead into the break after Arcuri hit Golia for a score with 2:34 left in the half.
Â
Lincoln Memorial and North Greenville traded goals early in the third quarter, with Arcuri scoring off of a Golia assist at the 13:21 mark and Drew Wassenaar putting in an unassisted score a little over three minutes later, but the Railsplitters would end the quarter with a 3-0 flurry to build a 9-5 advantage. Arcuri played a hand in all three of those goals, scoring at 7:47 and 6:26 before finding Golia at 4:20.
Â
North Greenville would close the gap to 10-7 by the 8:48 mark of the fourth quarter on a goal by Alex Proly, but Golia and Neisler accounted for the only two goals over the remainder of play to complete the 12-7 victory.
Â
The Railsplitters controlled the pace offensively despite going just 8-for-22 on face-off attempts. Lincoln Memorial outshot the Crusaders 32-27 and went 8-for-10 on clears.
Â
Josh Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) led the Railsplitters with four ground ball recoveries, while four different players finished with two ground balls.
Â
Lincoln Memorial junior goalkeeper
Joe Medel (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up the win in net for the Railsplitters after making 11 saves over 60 minutes of action.
Â
Alex Proly led the Crusaders with two goals and an assist. Drew Wassenaar added a goal and two assists with a game-high eight shots. Jalen Bell led all players with seven ground balls.
Â
North Greenville goalkeeper Matthew Sandoval was saddled with the loss after allowing 12 goals and making eight saves in 60 minutes of work.
Â
The Railsplitters are back in action on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Banner Elk, N.C. to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 1 p.m.
