NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (3-6) belted three key home runs to pace a doubleheader sweep of the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans (5-3) in NCAA Division II softball action on Wednesday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.
Â
Lincoln Memorial led for the majority of game one, but the Trojans tied it late to force extra innings, where the Lady Railsplitters would go on to claim a dramatic 5-3 victory. In game two, LMU's bats broke out and scored eight unanswered runs to power an 11-2 victory in five innings.
Â
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 5, Trevecca Nazarene 3 (8 innings)Â
The first three innings passed without consequence, with Lincoln Memorial's
Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and Trevecca's Haley Fagan trading zeros.
Â
But the Lady Railsplitters sparked a rally in the top of the fourth, as
Parker Brantley (Zebulon, N.C.) and
Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) led off with back-to-back singles.
Meredith Johnson (Kenly, N.C.) drove the first run of the game home with a double, while an RBI ground out from
Teddi Collins (Germantown, Ohio) put Lincoln Memorial ahead 2-0.
Â
Taylor set the Trojans down in order in the bottom of the fifth, but Trevecca tied the game up in the next inning, as Shelby Andrews hit a two-run home run. A single by Caitlyn Hudgins and a fielder's choice helped the Trojans put a runner on second base that same inning, but Taylor forced a ground out to end the threat.
Â
It was the Lady Railsplitters' turn to threaten in the top of the seventh, as Collins doubled with one out. However, a strikeout and a ground out kept Lincoln Memorial off the board.
Â
Taylor worked around a lead-off single to keep the Trojans scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters grabbed the lead early in the top of the eighth frame, as an error by the Trevecca third baseman allowed
Savannah Couch (Colonial Heights, Va.) to score from second. That would be just the start, though, as Moose connected on her third home run of the season two batters later to stake Lincoln Memorial to a 5-2 lead.
Â
In spite of the late three-run lead, the Trojans made things interesting in the bottom of the eighth. Following back-to-back walks, Trevecca had the bases loaded with no outs. A sacrifice ground out trimmed the LMU lead to 5-3 and brought the potential winning run to the plate. However, reliever
Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) forced Tana Whited into a ground out and struck out pinch hitter Sammie Jo Ivy to end the game.
Â
Alicia Raymond (Cleveland, Tenn.) was credited with the win for Lincoln Memorial, moving to 1-3 after holding the Trojans without an earned run over two innings of relief work. Smith earned the save with a scoreless and hitless inning of work. Taylor was stellar in the start for the Lady Railsplitters, limiting TNU to four hits and two runs over five innings.
Â
Moose went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Lady Railsplitters' offensive attack, while Johnson and Collins both added a hit and an RBI apiece.
Â
Andrews and Hudgins had two hits apiece for the Trojans, who finished the game with six hits as a team.
Â
Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 11, Trevecca Nazarene 2 (5 innings) Â
Trevecca took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Ansley Brantley led off with a walk, stole second and later scored on an infield error.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters didn't trail for long, though, as
Allie Jones (Ooltewah, Tenn.) opened the top of the second with a single to spark a three-run rally. After Jones moved to second on a ground out and
Ashlea Hunter (Woodruff, S.C.) reached safely on a fielder's choice, Collins drew the game even with an RBI single. Another fielder's choice allowed Couch to reach and plated Hunter, while a run-scoring ground out from
Lindsay Cecil (Winston-Salem, N.C.) capped the inning and put Lincoln Memorial ahead 3-1.
Â
The Trojans got a run back in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Brantley, but that would be the final run of the game for the home team, as the Lady Railsplitters would tally the next eight runs to end the game early.
Â
Lincoln Memorial scored twice in the top of the third, which was sparked by back-to-back base knocks from Moose and
BriAnna Schrimpf (Chandler, Ariz.). A fielder's choice by
Becca Burchette (Gas City, Ind.) plated the first run, while a single by Collins accounted for the second.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters broke the game wide open in the top of the fourth frame, as Couch led off with a single and scored on a double by Cecil. Moose drew a walk two batters later to put runners on first and second for Jones, who promptly cleared the bases and made it a 9-2 game with a three-run home run, the first of her collegiate career.
Â
Another home run brought the run-rule into effect in the top of the fifth, as Cecil hammered a two-run bomb to increase the Lady Railsplitters' lead to 11-2.
Â
Smith then completed her three-hit performance in the bottom of the fifth inning by eliciting a strikeout, a ground out and a pop out. Smith (1-1) picked up the win after striking out five and giving up just one earned run over in the complete game. Â
Â
Cecil went 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Jones added two hits and three RBIs. Collins also posted a pair of hits and two RBIs to aid to the Lady Railsplitters' 10-hit effort.
Â
Alex Richardson accounted for two of the Trojans' three hits.
Â
With the sweep, the Lady Railsplitters improve to 3-1 all-time against Trevecca.
Â
Lincoln Memorial is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Due West, S.C. to take on the Erskine Flying Fleet for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.Â
