No. 3 Railsplitters try to close out perfect SAC season against Catawba on Saturday

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The third-ranked Railsplitters (25-2, 21-0 SAC) look to accomplish something that's never been done in the 25-year history of South Atlantic Conference basketball at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon when they welcome the Catawba Indians (12-15, 10-11 SAC) to Tex Turner Arena to close out the regular season schedule.

With a win, Lincoln Memorial would become the first team to finish with a perfect record in SAC play in 50 combined seasons on either the men's or women's side. The Railsplitters would also break the 2014-15 team's SAC single-season record for conference wins with their 22nd league victory. Remarkably, those accomplishments are in play in quite possibly the SAC's strongest season of men's hoops, as four different teams from the league have been ranked in the national poll at various times this season.

Those feats became a possibility on Wednesday night, when the Railsplitters captured an 87-71 victory over the Anderson Trojans in Anderson, S.C. to move to 21-0 in SAC play. Lincoln Memorial was stuck in neutral early in that contest, as Anderson led 27-25 with nine minutes left in the first half, but the Railsplitters held the Trojans without a field goal over that final nine-minute stretch to fuel a 21-2 run that ultimately made the difference in the outcome. Gerel Simmons (Accokeek, Md.) and Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) powered the Railsplitters with 20 points apiece.

Choice went 4-for-6 from three-point range in that game to drive his season total for threes to 98. The Laurens, S.C. native now needs three three-pointers to break his own single-season record, which he set last season with 100 triples. If he reaches that mark again, Choice would be just the second player in SAC history to hit 100 three-pointers in two different seasons, joining Tusculum's Kyle Moore (2008-10). He is ranked fourth in the nation in made three-pointers, while his 48.8 three-point field-goal percentage is the fifth-best mark in the country.

As a team, Lincoln Memorial sits 21 three-pointers away from matching the SAC single-season record for made three-pointers. Newberry's 2013-14 team is the current record holder, as the Wolves buried 320 triples on 859 attempts that season. The Railsplitters enter the regular-season finale ranked ninth in the nation in threes made with 299 on the nation's second-best three-point field-goal percentage at 43.7 percent. The Railsplitters have attempted just 684 three-pointers this season.

Catawba clinched at worst the seven-seed for the upcoming SAC Championship on Wednesday night with a 78-62 win over the Wingate Bulldogs. In that game, the Indians held the region's fourth-ranked team to 37 percent shooting and got 27 points from Jameel Taylor to pick up that signature victory. Prior to that, Catawba beat Brevard by 11 points to snap a four-game losing streak.

The Indians have battled a slew of injuries all season, losing last season's leading scorer KJ Arrington in the preseason and fourth-leading scorer Malik Constantine after four games. But Catawba has remained competitive thanks to do-it-all sophomores Taylor and Jerrin Morrison. Taylor is averaging 16.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game on 49.5 percent shooting and a 43.2 percent mark from the three, while Morrison is chipping in 12.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game on 39.4 percent shooting. That duo is backed by Rakeen Brown's 9.8 points per game.

Despite the efforts of Taylor and Morrison, the Indians average just 76.4 points per game on 43.4 percent shooting and a 35.2 percent mark from three-point range. But the Indians allow only 77.3 points per game and lead the SAC in three-point field-goal defense by surrendering just 32 percent shooting from deep.

Catawba has been a different team at home as compared to on the road this season. The Indians are 9-5 at home, but just 3-10 outside of Salisbury. Catawba's win at Wingate on Wednesday snapped a three-game road losing streak.

The Railsplitters have won 10 of the last 11 games against Catawba, including an 82-64 win in Salisbury earlier this season on January 16. Like Wednesday's game at Anderson, Lincoln Memorial used a big run at the end of the first half to provide the distance necessary to overcome the Indians. The Railsplitters closed the first half on a 16-4 run and held the Indians to 10-for-35 shooting over the first 20 minutes of action to pace the victory. Simmons and Choice scored 21 points apiece, while Taylor led the Indians with 17 points.

In coordination with the final regular-season home game of the 2015-16 season, Lincoln Memorial will celebrate Senior Day with a pre-game ceremony. Curtis McMillion (Fayetteville, N.C.), Tim Pierce (Albany, Ga.), Jalen Steele (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Simmons will be honored, as will redshirt-junior Curtis Webb (Spartanburg, S.C.), who has opted to forego his last year of eligibility to head to dental school.

After the game, the Railsplitters will celebrate their fourth consecutive SAC regular season title and fifth in the past six seasons by cutting down the nets at Tex Turner Arena. Fans are invited to stick around and take part in the celebration.

Lincoln Memorial has won 15 straight games overall, 28 consecutive South Atlantic Conference games and 42 of 43 SAC games over the past two seasons combined.

Tip-off between Lincoln Memorial and Catawba is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday. Live stats, video and audio links are available online at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
