Railsplitters rally for 6-3 win over Davis & Elkins

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (19-8) scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally from a one-run deficit and defeat the Davis & Elkins Senators (6-14) in game one of a three-game NCAA Division II baseball series at Lamar Hennon Field on Friday afternoon.

Lincoln Memorial was mostly stifled offensively through the first seven innings and entered the bottom of the eighth inning staring up at a 3-2 deficit. But the Railsplitters conjured up a four-spot in that inning on one lone hit and never looked back.

Nobody finished with multiple hits in the game for the Railsplitters. Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the charge, though, by going 1-for-4 with two RBI and a walk, while Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) accounted for the only extra-base hit for the Railsplitters with a double and a run scored. HD Dillard (Wexford, Pa.) posted a triple and two walks with a run scored, while Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.), Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa), Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) and Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) each had an RBI apiece.

Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.) picked up the win for the Railsplitters after tossing two stellar innings of relief, evening his season record to 1-1 with the victory. Morabito was perfect over his two frames, striking out four without allowing a hit or a walk. Brandon Jean (Franklin, Tenn.) made the start for Lincoln Memorial, allowing just four hits with two earned runs in the no decision. Jean struck out five over seven innings of work.

Davis & Elkins used five pitchers in the contest and that group combined to issue 13 walks and hit two batters. Christian Scott was saddled with the loss after serving up three runs (one earned) in two innings of relief. Zach Bradfield made the start for the Senators, holding Lincoln Memorial to four hits and two runs over that span despite serving up seven walks.

The Senators struck first by scoring two runs in the top of the second despite not recording a single hit in the inning. Jean plunked back-to-back batters to put runners on first and second with no outs, while a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Michael Wood then plated a run with a sac fly, while a throwing error allowed another run to score and make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

Davis & Elkins pushed its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third, when Tyler Honeycutt singled and scored on a two-out base knock by Travis Phelps.

The Railsplitters closed the gap to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, as Neiderland drew a free pass and scored on a single by Ewers. However, two popups limited Lincoln Memorial to just a single run in the inning and left the bases loaded.

Kalman drew the Railsplitters within one run in the bottom of the fifth, trimming the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI single.

Lincoln Memorial left two more runners stranded in the sixth and couldn't get anything going in the seventh, but the eighth inning proved to be the turning point for the Railsplitters, who brought in four runs to power ahead 6-3.

Clark walked and Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) singled to put two runners on with only one out, while a fielder's choice aided by a throwing error tied the game at 3-3. After another walk and a popup, Augustine drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to give the Railsplitters a 4-3 lead. Kalman and Neiderland later drew bases-loaded walks to catapult the Railsplitters out to a commanding 6-3 lead.

The Senators then went down in 1-2-3 order in the top of the ninth to complete the Railsplitters' come-from-behind victory.

The Railsplitters found a way to win despite stranding 12 runners on the bases in the contest.

Lincoln Memorial completes its series against Davis & Elkins on Saturday with a doubleheader back at Lamar Hennon Field beginning at 1 p.m.
