HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Newberry Wolves (3-1, 1-0 SAC) scored four unanswered goals to notch a 10-9 come-from-behind victory and deny the Lady Railsplitters (1-3, 0-1 SAC) of their first-ever South Atlantic Conference win in the SAC opener on Saturday afternoon in Harrogate, Tenn.
Â
Lincoln Memorial carried a 7-6 lead into the half and increased its cushion to 9-6 early in the second half, but Newberry held the Lady Railsplitters scoreless over the match's final 23 minutes to power a 4-0 closing run.
Â
Bre'Asia James (Vero Beach, Fla.) paced the Lady Railsplitters with two goals, three assists, five draw controls and six shot attempts, while
Amara Moss (Woodbridge, Va.) tallied three goals on five shots on goal.
Jasmin Click (Clermont, Fla.) also scored two goals, while
Abby Hoskins (Louisville, Ky.) accounted for a goal and an assist.
Â
Goalkeeper
Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) made a season-high 14 saves, but falls to 1-3 on the season in the loss.
Â
Newberry took a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the match on a goal by Kylee Shoop, but the Lady Railsplitters responded just 18 seconds later on a goal by Hoskins, which was set up by James, to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
Goals from Jessica Baxtrom, Morgan Raffaele, Katie Thompson and Rachel Dillon sandwiched around Click's first goal of the match increased the Newberry lead to 5-2 with just under 18 minutes left in the half, but the Lady Railsplitters would end the half on a 5-1 run to turn the tide.
Â
James scored at the 16- and 13-minute marks to kick-start that run, while Moss tallied her seventh goal of the season with 11 minutes left in the first half to tie the game at 5-5.
Â
Thompson briefly stopped the bleeding for Newberry with a goal, but Click drew it back even at the 2:37 mark before Moss scored with six seconds left in the half to send the Lady Railsplitters into the break with a 7-6 edge.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters quickly increased their lead to 9-6 by scoring two goals in the first six and a half minutes of the second half. Moss scored the first just 47 seconds in off of an assist from James, while
Autumn Beddington (Newburgh, Ind.) checked into the scoring column at the 23:25 mark.
Â
That would be the last goal of the match for Lincoln Memorial, though, as Newberry called a timeout after Beddington's goal and responded to that deficit with renewed vigor.
Â
Helen Kuhn and Dillon brought the Wolves to within one with goals less than a minute apart, while Alexis Kahler drew the match even at 9-9 with her second goal of the season at the 15:49 mark.
Â
Newberry took the lead for good with 13:42 left on a goal by Baxtrom.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters produced two really good chances to get the equalizer late. James found herself all alone in front of the net on a breakaway attempt with eight minutes left, but her shot went wide of the net. Moss also got a quality shot off with 1:30 left, but Brandy Bowman made the save to keep Newberry in front.
Â
Baxtrom, Thompson and Dillon led the Wolves with two goals apiece. Bowman made seven saves in the net for Newberry to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Â
Lincoln Memorial came up just a bit short of its first SAC victory, but put in by far the program's best-ever performance in a league contest. Prior to Saturday, the Lady Railsplitters had not scored more than four goals in a SAC match and had not lost by fewer than 13 goals.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters return to action on Tuesday, March 8 when they travel to Wilmore, Ky. to face the Asbury Eagles at 4 p.m.
