Moss' six goals power Lady Railsplitters past Asbury, 17-12

WILMORE, Ky. -- The Lady Railsplitter lacrosse team (2-3) built an early lead and held off a late charge by Asbury (0-4) to hold on for their second win of the season with the 17-12 win Tuesday afternoon.

The game was originally scheduled to be the season opener for both teams, but snow in Harrogate in early February forced the game to be rescheduled to today and moved to Asbury.

Amara Moss (Woodbridge, Va.) led LMU with a career-high and school record 6 goals to go along with two ground balls and two draw controls. Jasmin Click (Clermont, Fla.) added in four goals, while Bre'Asia James (Vero Beach, Fla.) had three goals, eight draw controls and two ground balls. Abby Hoskins (Louisville, Ky.) and Casey Kelly (Ellenwood, Ga.) each had two goals apiece, with Kelly adding six draw controls. Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) and Sarah Loveday (Seymour, Tenn.) split time in cage with each playing a half; Novak had five saves and Loveday had four.

Elise Shin led the Eagles with five goals, followed by Savannah Neese with four and Alex George with three goals.

LMU out-shot Asbury 29-24, had 21 draw controls to Asbury's nine and went 13-17 in clears while the Eagles were 16-24.

Moss led things off as she scored 39 seconds into the game. Goals by Neese and shin then put Asbury ahead before the Lady Railsplitter offense exploded for eight unanswered goals over the next 13:30 and give LMU the 9-2 lead.

Click scored her first goal of the day to spark the run at the 19:37 mark. Kelly picked up her first goal a couple minutes later, followed five minutes after that by another goal from Click. Hoskins, Kelly and Moss then scored goals to put LMU ahead 7-2. James then scored two goals 10 seconds apart to extend the Lady Railsplitter lead. Neese then picked up her second goal to make the score 9-3 before LMU goals from Click and James closed out the half with the Lady Railsplitters holding the 11-3 lead.

The Lady Railsplitters opened up the second half with goals from Moss and Hoskins that extended the lead to 13-3. The teams then traded goals as Asbury's Shin found the back of the net with 25:36 remaining, followed by the goal by Click off the pass from Kelley a few minutes later.

AU then scored five unanswered goals over the next ten minutes to cut the lead to 14-9. Moss then picked up her fourth goal of the game with 10:11 left to put the Lady Railsplitter back up by six. After a pair of Asbury goals Moss once again found the back of the net with 3:45 remaining. AU's George would score with 1:32 left to cut the lead to 16-12, but Moss picked up her sixth goal with seven seconds left to seal the victory.
