Quick Hits:
-The Lady Railsplitters split their second straight SAC series on Saturday at Queens, dropping game one 11-3 in five innings before bouncing back with a 6-3 win in game two. The Royals jumped all over Lincoln Memorial in Saturday's matinee, collecting 16 hits with four home runs. Queens scored five runs in the third before ending the game early with a four-run fifth. The Lady Railsplitters flipped the script in game two, though, blasting three home runs to salvage the split. LMU scored its last four runs of the game off of home runs by
Meredith Johnson (Kenly, N.C.),
Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) and
Allie Jones (Ooltewah, Tenn.). The game-one loss was LMU's first defeat at the hands of the royals since 2005.
-Senior right-hander
Samantha Smith has had an up-and-down season on the mound, as she improved to 7-8 by going the distance against Queens in game two. But Smith has provided an unexpected lift at the plate recently. The Knoxville, Tennessee native followed up her two-home run performance at Brevard by going 2 for 4 with a home run against the Royals in game two in Charlotte. After going homerless through the first 55 at-bats of her career, Smith has now hit three home runs in her last six plate appearances.
-Head coach
Natalie Layden enters Wednesday's twinbill two wins away from career win No. 100, as she has amassed a 98-86 record in her five-season tenure with the Lady Railsplitters. It would require a rare feat for Layden to reach that mark, though, as Lincoln Memorial has not swept a doubleheader from Carson-Newman since joining the South Atlantic Conference prior to the 2007 season. In fact, LMU hasn't taking two from the Eagles since 1998.
-Fielding has been a bit of a bugaboo for the Lady Railsplitters this season, as they are tied for seventh in the SAC with a .958 fielding percentage, while their 51 errors are the third-most in the league behind only Brevard and Tusculum. Lincoln Memorial has not had an error-free game since March 23, while the Lady Railsplitters combined for seven miscues in that doubleheader at Queens.
-Wednesday begins a tough closing stretch for the Lady Railsplitters. After squaring off against third-place Carson-Newman, Lincoln Memorial treks to Hickory, North Carolina on Saturday to face second-place Lenoir-Rhyne. The Lady Railsplitters then wrap up the regular season against Newberry and Mars Hill, who are currently just a game behind LMU and will be fighting for a playoff spot.
Notes on the Eagles:
-In its 31st season under the direction of 11-time SAC Coach of the Year Vickee Kazee-Hollifield, who is the winningest coach in league history, Carson-Newman once again finds itself near the top of the SAC standings with an 11-3 conference mark and a 26-14 overall record. The Eagles are 5-1 in the month of April, but they most recently split a doubleheader against Coker, winning game one 10-1 in five innings before suffering a 5-3 defeat in game two.
-The Eagles are a power-hitting bunch, leading the SAC in home runs (35) while ranking third in slugging percentage with a .434 clip. Carson-Newman also reaches base at an absurd clip with a .370 on-base percentage against SAC opponents. That is due in large part to their patience at the plate, as the Eagles have drawn the second-most walks in the SAC with 126 while eliciting 30 hit-by-pitches.
-Senior Elayna Siebert - a 2015 first team All-American - is putting together another monster season for the Eagles, as she enters Wednesday's doubleheader sporting a .392/.461/.615 slash line with nine doubles, four triples, four home runs and 31 RBI. Sophomores Kristen Toppel and Lindsay Dean have provided a ton of support for Siebert. Toppel is hitting .351 with 11 doubles and three home runs, while Dean is batting .303 with a team-leading 13 home runs and 36 RBI. Freshman Shon Jordan (.269, 4 2B, 3 HR, 23 RBI) and sophomore Katie Pritchett (.294, 9 2B, 5 HR, 29 RBI) are also players to watch.
-In addition to their potent offensive attack, the Eagles have been strong on the mound this season with a 2.24 team ERA and a .226 batting average against. Those numbers have been vastly improved in SAC play, too, where Carson-Newman's staff is boasting a 1.72 earned run average with a .211 batting average against. Junior Allison Webster has thrown the bulk of the innings for the Eagles, accumulating a 16-8 record with a 1.82 ERA and 199 strikeouts over 157 1/3 innings of work. Danielle Kranz is 5-5 this season with 43 strikeouts in 65 2/3 innings.
-The Eagles aren't much of a threat once they get on base, ranking dead last in the SAC in steal with 14. Toppel leads the team in that category with five, while Donna Ryan has recorded three steals.
Series History:
-The LMU/Carson-Newman series, which is in its 30th year of existence, has weighed heavily in favor of the Eagles, who are 45-19 all-time against the Lady Railsplitters. Carson-Newman has won 15 of the last 19 meetings including three straight.
-Carson-Newman swept last season's doubleheader in Jefferson City, winning game one 3-1 before completing the sweep with a 9-1 victory in game two. The Lady Railsplitters split with the Eagles at Dorothy Neely Field in 2014, taking game one 4-0 and dropping game two 9-5. LMU is 11-16 all-time at home in the series.
