HICKORY, N.C. -- Junior catcher
Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) racked up five hits with a pair of doubles, but the Lady Railsplitters (19-26, 7-11 SAC) dropped both ends of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at No. 24 Lenoir-Rhyne (39-9, 16-2 SAC) on Saturday in Hickory, North Carolina.
Â
In game one, the Bears uncorked 17 hits and scored five runs in the bottom of the first en route to a 10-0 win in five innings. In game two, the Lady Railsplitters rallied from a 4-0 deficit with a four-run outburst in the top of the sixth, but Lenoir-Rhyne answered in the bottom of that inning to complete the sweep with a 5-4 win.
Â
With the two losses, Lincoln Memorial head coach
Natalie Layden was denied her 100th career coaching victory and held steady at No. 99, while the Lady Railsplitters fell to 3-22 all-time against Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bears also extended their winning streak versus the Lady Railsplitters to five games.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters are back in action on Wednesday, paying the Mars Hill Lions a visit for a SAC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Â
Game One: Lenoir-Rhyne 10, Lincoln Memorial 0 (5 innings)
Â
Nothing went right for the Lady Railsplitters in Saturday's matinee, as Lenoir-Rhyne pitchers Maryann Hoskins and Emily Kenley combined to throw a three-hitter, while the Bears' offense piled up 17 hits and scored multiple runs in the first three innings to make short work of Lincoln Memorial.
Â
Moose went 2 for 3 with a double to lead the LMU attack, while
Kristen McAndrew (Belmont, N.C.) went 1 for 1 with a walk to account for the Lady Railsplitters' only other hit in the contest.
Â
Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) fell to 10-12 on the season after allowing a season-high 16 hits and nine earned runs over four innings of work. Taylor's streak of winless appearances hit six games, as the sophomore right-hander struck out two and walked one.
Â
Sarah Kenley went 2 for 3 with five RBI and a home run to lead the Bears, while Carter was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with four RBI. Erin Boone and Christina Walker also added three hits apiece, while Sydney Landreth went 2 for 3.
Â
Hoskins picked up the win for the Bears, allowing just two hits and no runs over four innings of work to improve to 14-6 on the season. Kenley threw the final inning for Lenoir-Rhyne, relinquishing just a single hit with a strikeout.
Â
Boone, Carter and Walker singled in three of the first four at-bats of the game for the Bears in the bottom of the first inning to load the bases for Kenley, who connected on a grand slam to straightaway center field to kick-off Lenoir-Rhyne's wire-to-wire victory. Landreth followed that up with a single, eventually coming around to score on a double from Ashley Oliver, which capped a five-run first frame.
Â
The Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the second, when Boone and Walker singled and scored on a double from Carter.
Â
Lenoir-Rhyne then brought the run-rule into effect in the bottom of the third, as Carter singled in two more runs and Kenly notched her fifth RBI of the game on a run-scoring single.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters had a chance to cut into Lenoir-Rhyne's lead in the top of the fourth, as
BriAnna Schrimpf (Chandler, Ariz.) and
Meredith Johnson (Kenly, N.C.) were hit by pitches and McAndrew singled to load the bases with two outs. However, Hoskins struck out Taylor to strand the bases loaded and keep Lincoln Memorial off the board.
Â
Moose collected her second hit of the game with a two-out single in the fifth, but the Lady Railsplitters were unable to spark a rally off of that, as a fielder's choice ended the game early.
Â
Game Two: Lenoir-Rhyne 5, Lincoln Memorial 4
Â
Senior
Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit her fourth home run of the season and fourth over her last four appearances to help the Lady Railsplitters rally out of a 4-0 hole, but Lenoir-Rhyne generated the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth to complete the sweep.
Â
Smith, who finished 1 for 2 at the plate with two RBI, also made the start for the Lady Railsplitters, falling to 8-9 on the season after allowing 11 hits and five earned runs over six innings of work. Smith struck out two and walked two while allowing a pair of home runs.
Â
Moose powered the Lady Railsplitters once again at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
Allie Jones (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and Johnson also had doubles for Lincoln Memorial, which produced eight hits as a team.
Â
Emily Kenley (7-2) picked up the win for the Bears by tossing five innings in relief of starter Brandi Hole, who was pulled from the game without recording an out in the top of the second. Kenley allowed just four hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts before giving way to Hoskins, who earned her fourth saves of the season by allowing just one hit in the seventh.
Â
Walker went 2 for 4 with three RBI to lead the Bears at the plate, while Boone, Jordin Phillips, Landreth and Madison Poe had two hits apiece.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters put pressure on the Bears in both the first and second innings. Cecil and Moose recorded back-to-back singles to lead off in the top of the first, but two fielder's choices and a strikeout ended that threat. In the second, Johnson led off with a double, but Kenley struck out the side to keep the Lady Railsplitters off the board once again.
Â
Lenoir-Rhyne then checked into the scoring column, as Landreth hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second. Another solo home run, this time from Kenley, increased the Bears' lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Lenoir-Rhyne would add two more runs to its total that inning when Walker singled in a pair.
Â
Staring up at a 4-0 deficit entering the top of the sixth, Smith shook the Lady Railsplitters' offense to life by connecting on a two-run home run over the wall in left field. After Smith's dinger, a fielding error, a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Moose, who singled in another run to trim the deficit to 4-3. Jones then tied the game up with an RBI groundout to second base. The Lady Railsplitters had the potential winning run at third base that inning, but a strikeout kept the game deadlocked at 4-4.
Â
The Bears answered right back, though, as Poe singled and Boone doubled in front of Walker, who drove in the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth with a groundout to second.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters put the tying run at second base in the top of the seventh after
Becca Burchette (Gas City, Ind.) singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. However, an infield popup and a strikeout left her stranded at second and ended the game.
