TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- A second-half scoring drought proved to be too much for the Lady Railsplitter lacrosse team (3-9) to overcome as they fell at North Greenville (8-4) by a 7-4 margin Wednesday evening at Pepsi Field.
Amara Moss (Woodbridge, Va.) led LMU in goals with two.
Bre'Asia James (Vero Beach, Fla.) and
Casey Kelly (Ellenwood, Ga.) had LMU's other two goals.
Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) had 11 saves.
Hanna Hawkins and Monica Colwell led NGU with two goals apiece.
The match was close statistically as NGU outshot LMU 24-22 and had 18 shots on goal to LMU's 17. NGU led in saves 13-11 and ground balls 29-21. LMU did out-draw North Greenville by a 9-4 advantage.
North Greenville got on the board first as Emily Colson scored almost two and a half minutes into the contest.
Bre'Asia James evened things up a few minutes later as she scored her 23rd goal of the season. LMU then took the lead at the 18:18 mark when
Jasmin Click (Clermont, Fla.) found Kelly for the score. The game then became a defensive struggle as neither team was able to generate much offense. NGU heated up late as they scored a pair of quick goals with a little over six minutes left to grab the lead. The Crusaders would go up by a 4-3 margin late in the half only to see Kelly find Moss inside the arc and she put it past the keeper to cut the lead to 4-3 right before halftime.
NGU scored a quick goal to start the second half and then neither team was able to generate much offense for the remainder of the game. Hawkins scored her first goal with 13 minutes remaining to put the Crusaders up 6-3 and all but put the game out of reach. Moss woud pick up her 32nd goal of the season to cut the lead to 6-4 but Hawkins would score again less than 30 seconds later to put NGU back up by three. LMU would have five shots down the stretch but could not get any closer as they fell 7-4.
The Lady Railsplitter now have a week off before they make the short trip to play at UVa-Wise on April 13. The two teams met back on March 3 with the Cavaliers prevailing 15-2 under snowy conditions. First draw is set for 7 p.m. at the Carl Smith Stadium.
