Notes on the Lady Railsplitters:
Preview with Coach D'Anna on the Papa John's Splitter Sound Bites podcast
-Lincoln Memorial endured a disheartening defeat to the Lee Flames on Sunday in the LMU Soccer Complex opener, as the Flames pushed in three second-half goals on their way to a 4-0 win. The Lady Railsplitters held their own against the extremely athletic and organize Flames in the first half, going into the break trailing 1-0 while building up several scoring chances. In the second half, however, Lee's pace and quickness broke through, as the Flames tallied three more times to power the 4-0 win. Lee outshot LMU 17-9 in the match, but the Lady Railsplitters kept pace in corner kicks and shots on goal, trailing by just three in each of those categories.
-The 0-3 start is the first for the Lady Railsplitters since the 2003 team opened at 0-4. Using that as a guide, Lincoln Memorial has reason for optimism, as that team went on to finish 7-11.
-The Lady Railsplitters are looking to snap a 243-minute scoreless streak, as Lincoln Memorial's lone goal of the year was tallied by sophomore forward
Caroline Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the 27th minute of the season-opener against Bellarmine. The chances have certainly been there for LMU, as junior midfielder
Melissa Carpenter (Jacksonville, Fla.) and junior defender
Gabby Garcia (Aurora, Colo.) lead the team with six shots. Not far behind that duo, Souza has five shots with three on goal and sophomore midfielder
Isa Jara (Miami, Fla.) has two shots.
-In goal, senior keeper
Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, Mich.) has played the majority of the minutes for the Lady Railsplitters with 192:39 minutes of action. Over that span, Lundy has made six saves on 32 shots and given up eight goals against a challenging slate of opponents.
Brooke Taylor (White Pine, Tenn.) has also seen some action for the Lady Railsplitters, appearing in 77:21 minutes total. She has five saves and five goals against over that stretch.
-Over the last five seasons, Lincoln Memorial is a combined 23-21-7 in SAC play, with 2014 standing as the most successful of that five-year span. The Lady Railsplitters went 7-2-2 in SAC play that season. Lincoln Memorial is looking to rebound from a 3-6-2 mark in conference play last season.
Notes on Brevard:
-Brevard has started the season at an incredibly fast pace, scoring nine goals over three matches to start 3-0. Wednesday's match will be the SAC opener for Brevard as well, as they have opened the 2016 campaign against D-III opponents Emory & Henry and Oglethorpe, as well as against Conference Carolinas' King University.
-Through three matches, Brevard has outshot its opponents 52-19, accounted for a 9-0 scoring advantage and put a higher percentage of shots on goal with a .442 average. The Tornados have yet to play a home match this season, as they played King and Emory & Henry on the road and faced Oglethorpe in Spartanburg.
-Leading the way for the Tornados is senior midfielder Anita Maryskova with two goals on nine shots and five shots on goal. Following her is sophomore forward Caroline David and freshman forward Ashley Mevoli with seven shots apiece. David has two goals on the season so far, and Mevoli has tacked on one goal and one assist. Also scoring for Brevard this season is senior midfielder Alyssa Bois, sophomore midfielder Ashley Hughes and junior defender Kathleen Grant with one goal on the year for each.
-Minding the net for Brevard is sophomore Elise Youmans, who has played 241:46 minutes of a possible 270. Youmans has started two games, making six saves and giving up zero goals, giving her one shutout on the season. Freshman Laurel Neuzil and junior Courtney Perkins have also spent minimal time in goal for the Tornados. Neuzil has played in 19:14 minutes of action, playing a role in two shutout victories and making two saves. Perkins has logged nine minutes of action this year.
