ANDERSON, S.C. –The Railsplitters (10-4, 5-3 SAC) will try to bounce back from Monday night's heartbreaking overtime loss when they make the quick turnaround to face the Anderson Trojans (7-7, 5-3 SAC) inside the Abney Center in Anderson, S.C. at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
Due to inclement winter weather, Lincoln Memorial's trip to Charlotte to square off against the No. 3 nationally-ranked Queens Royals was pushed from Saturday to Monday, leaving the Railsplitters just 24 hours to recover from an emotionally-taxing loss.
The Railsplitters, who were without starting forward
Emanuel Terry (Enterprise, Ala.) and backup point guard
Deshawn Patterson (Lenoir, N.C.), fell into a 13-point hole in the first half, but steadily worked their way back into it. Lincoln Memorial trailed by five points with just over a minute left before a three-point play from
Trevon Shaw (St. Helena Island, S.C.) and a fast-break layup from
Hunter Spaw (Bean Station, Tenn.) tied it up. Spaw later made two free throws with two seconds left to force overtime.
In overtime, the Railsplitters held a three-point lead on four separate occasions, but Queens closed on a 5-0 run to capture a 103-101 win.
Dorian Pinson (Greenville, S.C.), who was magnificent in putting up 21 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, missed the potential game-winning three as time expired. The loss also spoiled stellar performances from Shaw and Spaw, who combined for 57 points. Spaw had a career-high 22, while Shaw recorded a season-high 25.
With the loss, Lincoln Memorial, the four-time defending South Atlantic Conference regular-season champions, fell three games back of Queens in the league standings and into a five-way tie with Newberry, Carson-Newman, Anderson and Lenoir-Rhyne for second place. It was the Railsplitters' third SAC loss of the season, matching the program's total number of league losses over the past three seasons combined.
The Railsplitters will aim to get back in the win column against an Anderson team that has been up and down throughout the 2016-17 campaign.
The Trojans opened the season by losing three of their first four games, but responded by winning six of the next nine games. That stretch would have been even better if not for a 72-71 loss to Catawba. Like Lincoln Memorial, Anderson is trying to recover from a loss, as the Trojans were beaten by Lenoir-Rhyne 94-85 on Sunday.
Anderson is a pretty solid offensive team. Despite accounting for the second-fewest field-goal attempts per game in the league, the Trojans are putting in 79.7 points per game on an efficient 47.6 percent mark, including a 38.2 percent clip from three-point range.
Anderson has paired that with a passable defensive unit that is allowing 77.4 points per game on 42.6 percent shooting. Opponents have shot the three well against the Trojans, though, as SAC foes are hitting 38.4 percent of their threes versus Anderson. That was most evident in the loss to Lenoir-Rhyne, as the Bears went 15-for-27 from deep in the nine-point win.
The Trojans are led by one of the most dynamic players in the league in 6-3 guard Randall Shaw, the reigning SAC Freshman of the Year. Shaw is leading the SAC in scoring with 21.8 points per game on 51.4 percent shooting and a 42.4 percent mark from three to go along with 4.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Shaw had a career-high 45 points and went 17-for-21 from the field in a 97-82 win at Brevard on January 4.
Other than Shaw, Anderson relies on a collection of six players that are averaging at least seven points per game. Redshirt-freshman Carlos Dotson is averaging 11.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game on 60 percent shooting, while sophomore Shawn Benard is contributing 9.1 points and 2.5 assists per game. Maurice Howard (8.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists per), Jeremy Bouton (7.2 points, 6.1 rebounds per), Christian Jeffords (7.1 points per) and Andrew Boynton (6.9 points per) are also factors.
The Railsplitters should be able to exploit a distinct advantage on the backboards, as the Trojans are ranked ninth in the SAC in total rebounds per game and seventh in rebounding margin with a plus-1.3 margin. Lincoln Memorial leads the SAC in rebounds per game and rebounding margin with a plus-9.4 edge.
Lincoln Memorial has lost just 15 SAC games since the start of the 2010-11 season and Anderson is responsible for five of those defeats. However, the Railsplitters haven't lost to the Trojans since November 2013, reeling off six straight wins in the series. Lincoln Memorial has won four straight games at Anderson since last losing in the Abney Center in January 2012.
In last season's trip to Anderson, the Railsplitters outscored the Trojans 46-29 in the opening half and cruised to an 87-71 victory.
Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) had 20 points with a 4-for-6 mark from three, while Shaw paced the Trojans with a game-high 26 points.
Tip-off between Lincoln Memorial and Anderson is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Wednesday night. Live stats, video and audio links are available at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
Five things to watch for against Anderson
1. Choice needs just four three-pointers to match Carson-Newman's Ish Sanders for the SAC career record for made threes. The Laurens, S.C. native has already obliterated the LMU career record, as he has 336 to his credit. The previous school record of 297 was held by the program's all-time leading scorer Nick Sanford.
2. Shaw has been outstanding in his two career games against Lincoln Memorial. In addition to his 26-point outburst at Anderson, he tallied 27 points on a 6-of-9 mark from three in the Trojans' trip to Harrogate.
3. Anderson is an incredibly young team as seven of its top-nine scorers are underclassmen. The Trojans are under the direction of second-year head coach Jeff Brookman.
4. Aside from front-running Queens, the SAC standings are bogged down with five teams (Lincoln Memorial, Newberry, Carson-Newman, Anderson, Lenoir-Rhyne) tied at 5-3, two (Catawba, Wingate) at 4-4 and two more (Tusculum, Coker) at 3-5.
5. The Railsplitters are mired in a stretch that will see them play six of eight games on the road. After Wednesday's contest, Lincoln Memorial returns to Tex Turner to face the Catawba Indians on Saturday before hitting the road to face Tusculum and Coker.
