AIKEN, S.C. – The Lady Railsplitters (9-10) went 1-1 on the final day of the South Atlantic Conference vs. Peach Belt Conference Challenge, romping the Augusta Jaguars in four sets in the afternoon match before falling in straight sets to the defending Southeast Region champion USC Aiken Pacers on Saturday evening in Aiken, S.C.
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 3, Augusta 1
The Lady Railsplitters produced a 59-41 edge in kills and outhit the Jaguars .213 to .164 to move to 3-1 over a four-match stretch with a 25-20, 25-21, 15-25, 25-17 victory in Saturday's early match.
Kiera Holland and
Lindsey Nartker powered that victory with 16 kills apiece. Holland finished with a .250 attack percentage and added seven digs, while Nartker established a new career-high for kills on a .262 attack percentage and added 15 digs. Freshman
Alicia Kessler also reset her career-high mark with 13 kills, while
Rylee Storms added eight.
Danielle Stachura tallied a season-best 29 assists, while
Erica Whiteaker led the team with 28 digs.
Olivia Brock chipped in 23 assists and seven digs.
McKenzey Beck was the only player to reach double-figure kills for Augusta with a team-high 10 while adding 18 assists and 12 digs for a triple-double. Alyssa Frazier had eight kills and Blair Bolton added seven. Four players produced double-digit digs for the Jaguars, led by Holland Martin's 20. Payton Murchie led the team with 21 assists.
The Lady Railsplitters piled up 18 kills to fuel their victory in the opening set. The two teams traded points early in the set before Lincoln Memorial went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 lead on a kill by Nartker. The Jaguars kept it close over the ensuing passage of play, but kills from Nartker, Kessler and Holland extended the LMU lead to 18-13. Augusta closed the gap back to 20-18 on a kill by McKenzey Beck before the Lady Railsplitters won five of the last seven rallies, capped by a kill from Nartker, to win it 25-20.
Neither team led by more than two points in the second set until a 4-0 run capped by a Whiteaker service ace gave the Lady Railsplitters a 14-11 lead. Lincoln Memorial never relinquished the lead from that point on, but Augusta cut the deficit to one seven times. However, LMU ended the set with three straight points to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 triumph.
The Jaguars came out with a vengeance in the third set, collecting 15 kills on a .400 clip to extend the match. The Lady Railsplitters cut the deficit to 6-5 on a kill by Nartker, but Augusta went on a 6-0 run after that to essentially put the set away. Lincoln Memorial was never able to cut the deficit to less than five down the stretch, while the Jaguars ended the fame on a 5-0 run powered by two kills from Beck.
The Lady Railsplitters returned the favor in the fourth set by accumulating 17 kills. Augusta held an early 6-5 lead until a 6-1 run gave Lincoln Memorial an 11-7 lead on a kill by Holland. The Jaguars fought back to cut LMU's lead to 13-12, but the Lady Railsplitters went on a 11-1 run after that to put the set away. Kessler later clinched the victory with her 13th kill of the match.
The win moved Lincoln Memorial to 9-0 all-time against Augusta.
Game Two: USC Aiken 3, Lincoln Memorial 0
In an inverse of the day's first match, USC Aiken finished with 17 more kills than the Lady Railsplitters, hit .289 and held Lincoln Memorial to a .105 mark to extend its winning streak to 18 games.
Holland was the only LMU player to finish with double-figure kills with 13, while
Tone Gill had nine. Nobody else had more than four. Brock paced Lincoln Memorial with 17 assists, while Whiteaker added 20 digs.
Alie Smith had a game-high 16 kills on a .407 clip to lead the Pacer offense. Avery Macklin chipped in eight kills, while Julia Forster and Christine Carroll had six apiece. Emily Teelon led all players with 32 assists and Rebecca Martinez had a match-high 25 digs.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair during which neither team could get any substantial separation. However, the Pacers used two LMU attack errors and a kill by Macklin to take an 18-15 lead late in the set. The Lady Railsplitters cut the deficit to 19-17 later on Smith's attack error, but USC Aiken ended the frame on a 6-1 run capped by a kill from Kayla Duggan to win it, 25-18.
Lincoln Memorial had an early 6-5 lead in the second before the Pacers went on a 6-1 run to establish an 11-7 lead. The Lady Railsplitters whittled the deficit down to 12-10 on a kill by Holland, but USC Aiken won the next six points to take a commanding 18-10 lead. The Pacers wouldn't let up from there and completed the 25-19 win with a kill from Smith.
The Pacers took control of the third and final set right from the jump, ripping off an 8-0 run powered by four kills from Macklin to take an 11-2 lead. The Lady Railsplitters were never able to recover from that early onslaught, sinking into a 21-9 hole after a kill from Duggan. Back-to-back errors by Holland ended the match with the Pacers' 25-16 win.
The Lady Railsplitters return to Mary Mars Gym to begin a three-match home stand on Friday, October 20, hosting the Coker Cobras in SAC action at 7 p.m.
