PHILIPPI, W.V. – Alderson Broaddus avenged its early-season loss to Lincoln Memorial Friday night, as the Battlers (2-9) bested the Railsplitters (3-8) in four sets. Lincoln Memorial took the first set 27-25, but dropped the next three 25-18, 25-20 and 25-9 to drop its third straight match overall.
The trio of Justin Glader, Obenda Besongngem and Erik Arroyo each racked up double digits in kills to combine for 44 of the Battlers' season-high 57 kills, led by Glader's career-best 20. The team also achieved season highs in assists (49), hit percentage (.404) and service aces (6). All six aces were served by Benjamin Bravo. Myles Miller also added career highs of five solo and nine total blocks.
Besongngem had the hot hand early for the Battlers with six of his 14 kills coming in the first set, as the team jumped to a 20-14 lead.
Evan Cory (Metairie, La.) led a furious Lincoln Memorial comeback with five of his team-best 12 kills—the last of which put the Railsplitters ahead 24-23. Alderson Broaddus re-took the lead on two Glader kills, but a NyJayee Washington (Las Vegas, Nev.) kill tied the score again.
Pedro Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished the set with consecutive kills to clinch the initial game for the Railsplitters. Both teams finished with 16 kills for their highest total of any set. Despite the loss in the set, Alderson Broaddus out-hit the Railsplitters .371 to .270 and committed three fewer errors.
The Battlers quickly built a six-point advantage in the second set behind three more Glader kills and a series of Railsplitter errors. That lead expanded to as many as eight points at 22-14, propelled by four of Arroyo's 10 kills. Terrell Hightower finished off the set with a kill.
Alderson Broaddus again jumped ahead by six points early in the third set at 11-5. Three more Glader kills and two Miller solo blocks fueled the run. Lincoln Memorial narrowed the deficit to three on six different occasions, but the Battlers responded with a point each time. The final time cut the lead to 23-20, but kills by Glader and Arroyo sealed the set and 2-1 Battler advantage. Glader finished with seven kills in the set, and the team hit .400 overall.
The fourth and final set was never in doubt, as Alderson Broaddus raced ahead 8-1. Bravo fueled the run with two of his service aces. The Railsplitters cut the deficit to 11-5, but the Battlers caught fire again and finished the set on a 14-4 run. Alderson Broaddus hit a scorching .500 in the set, while Lincoln Memorial committed eight errors and hit -.190.—its lowest total for a set this season.
