Railsplitters' rally falls short in 8-5 loss at Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Jordan Howard hit a grand slam as part of a five-RBI day while Geremy Walton connected on a two-run homer to lead the Lee Flames (6-1) in an 8-5 win over the Railsplitters (1-7) on Wednesday afternoon at Olympic Field.

For the fourth time this season, Lincoln Memorial took the first lead of the game with a run in the top of the first. However, the Flames scored in each of the first two innings, hung up six runs in the bottom of the fourth and held on to send the Railsplitters to 1-7. That is the program's worst start since the 2005 team lost its first nine games.

Lincoln Memorial racked up their third-most hits in a game this season with 11, but left 11 runners stranded on base.

Right-hander Timmy Wages (Molina, Ill.) allowed a run in three of his four innings of work, falling to 1-1 on the season after serving up seven hits and eight earned runs. He struggled with command with three hit batsman and one walk before being pulled in the fifth.

LMU's five relief pitchers - Cody Hinson (Taylor Ridge, Ill.), Matt Mullenbach (Urbandale, Iowa), Spencer Woods (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Derek Trainor-Fogleman (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.) - combined to allow just three hits and no runs over the final four innings.

Leadoff hitter Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.) opened the contest with a single back to the pitcher for the first of his team-leading three hits in the contest. He scored two batters later on a base knock by Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa), which was helped by an error in right field. Lincoln Memorial left two runners stranded on base that inning after Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) and Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) both flew out.

The Flames answered right back as Spencer Mossburg led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored on a single from Peyton Meeker to tie the game. Lee took a 2-1 lead in the next frame as Miguel Pimentel led off with a single, stole second and later scored on a sac fly from Howard.

Lee broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth as Pimentel singled, Nathan Wierzgac walked and Cameron Scott was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Howard, who sent everybody home with a grand slam over the right-field wall. After a fly out, Mossburg was hit by a pitch with two outs to put a runner on for Walton, who connected on a two-run bomb to make it 8-1.

The Railsplitters put a runner on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but wouldn't get anything across until the top of the eighth. Henry Moore (Mechanicsville, Va.) sparked that rally with a one-out single, which was followed by singles from Kalman and Grady Wright (Fayetteville, Tenn.), with the latter driving in a run. Joe Stucky (Powell, Tenn.) then walked to load the bases. Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) drew a walk to cut the deficit to 8-3, while Muta Crusoe (Bellwood, Ill.) drove in two with a single, but that was the extent of the damage.

The Railsplitters put a runner on base following a two-out walk in the ninth, but Wright ground out to end the game.

Lee threw seven pitchers in the game and Corbin Lamb picked up the win after holding the Railsplitters scoreless through two innings of work and giving up one hit. Kit Larson picked up the save with a blemish-free ninth.

Along with Stinson's three-hit performance, Kalman went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk. He was the only other LMU player with multiple hits.

The Flames finished with 10 hits, five of which went for extra bases. By comparison, only one of LMU's 11 hits was of the extra-base variety.

Lincoln Memorial begins a five-game homestand and makes its Lamar Hennon Field debut on Saturday with a doubleheader against Ohio Valley. Game one of that twinbill gets underway at 1 p.m.
