Clark and Adams homer as Railsplitters rout Ohio Valley 16-2 in home opener

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Senior catcher Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a two-run homer, and the rest of Lincoln Memorial's (2-7) offense woke up from its early-season slump to trounce the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots (0-4) 16-2 in Saturday afternoon's rain-soaked home opener at Lamar Hennon Field. Clark finished a triple short of the cycle with a walk and three RBI.

Freshman Tyler Adams (Woodstock, Ga.) drove in four runs, including three on his first career home run, and Nate Stinson and Mason Ewers added two more RBI apiece.

Ethan Elliott (Knoxville, Tenn.) finally received some run support behind him and shut down Ohio Valley with just two runs and three hits allowed in six innings of work. He also struck out nine on his way to his first win of the young season.

The Fighting Scots took an early lead in the top of the second without racking up a hit in the inning. Spencer Miller led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A bunt moved him to third, and Vaughn Wiggins' sac fly brought him in.

The Railsplitters answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. Clark led off with a single before Ohio Valley's starting pitcher Nicholas Shower retired the next two batters. The bases eventually loaded for Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.), who laced a single to left to drive in both runs.

Another leadoff walk came back to bite Elliott in the top of the fourth as the Fighting Scots tied the game in the inning. Jake Carr stole second after walking and scored on Mitch Davis' RBI single.

Lincoln Memorial took the lead for good and knocked Shower out of the game with five runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Adams started the rally with an RBI double to left-center that scored Turner Whitfield (Knoxville, Tenn). Tyler Mondoux replaced Showers after the hit. Two batters later, Mason Ewers doubled to left to plate two more runs. The next batter, Clark, smashed a deep fly to left that hit the top of the wall and bounced over. The two-run homer put the Railsplitters comfortably in front 7-2.

Elliott retired seven of the final eight batters he faced and struck out the side in the sixth to complete his afternoon.

The Railsplitters added eight more runs in the sixth to put the game completely out of reach. Clark kicked off the scoring with an RBI double down the left field line. Timmy Wages singled him home to increase his team-leading RBI total. AJ Weed (Hendersonville, Tenn.) singled home another run, and a throwing error on a Stinson ground ball to the shortstop brought home two more. Adams capped off the inning with his three-run home run, a shot over the left field wall.

An infield single by Joe Stucky (Powell, Tenn.) in the next inning increased the Railsplitter lead to 16-2.

The teams will meet for two more games Sunday, as the second game of Saturday's scheduled doubleheader was moved due to rain. The first game is slated for a 1 p.m. start with the second following at approximately 4 p.m.
