Lady Railsplitters challenge surprising Cobras in SAC action Saturday

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Lady Railsplitters (17-10, 1-3 SAC) play their first South Atlantic Conference road games of the season on Saturday when they face the Coker Cobras (25-9, 2-2 SAC) for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Saleeby-Stokes Field. Lincoln Memorial is back in action after splitting a conference doubleheader against Anderson on Wednesday, while Coker captured a pair of 6-1 wins over Queens that same day.

Quick Hits:

-The Lady Railsplitters fell into a 5-0 hole in game one against Anderson, but took advantage of six errors to outscore the Trojans 7-1 over the final four innings and rally for a stunning 7-6 victory. Lincoln Memorial used four hits and three Anderson errors to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ashlea Hunter (Woodruff, S.C.) drove in the game-tying runs with a three-run double to left field and later scored the go-ahead run on Anderson's final miscue of the inning.

-Lincoln Memorial gave up five runs in the top of the first inning in game two of the Anderson series. The Lady Railsplitters tried to rally again, but came up just a bit short in a 6-4 loss. Freshman right-hander Justice Smith (Rockmart, Ga.) dazzled in relief of Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.), who was unable to record an out while allowing five hit and four runs. Smith surrendered just three hits and one unearned run while striking out eight over seven innings of work. The Lady Railsplitters brought the potential tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout and a strikeouts ended the game.

-The LMU offensive attack had a solid showing against Anderson's shutdown starting pitcher Augie Pena. The Lady Railsplitters tallied nine hits with four extra-base knocks in game one against Pena, who entered that contest ranked first in the SAC in batting average against and earned run average. That was the most hits allowed by Pena this season.

-Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) extended her hitting streak to eight games in that doubleheader against Anderson. She went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk in game one before posting a 2-for-4 effort with a walk, a double and a run in game two. Since going 0-for-3 against University of the Sciences on March 11, Moose has lifted her average from .309 to .372, which ranks 20th in the SAC.

-Freshman Dakotah Fraley (Walkersville, Md.) has reached base in seven straight games and hit safely in six of those seven contests. Fraley went 3-for-8 against Anderson with two runs scored to lift her on-base percentage to .465, the 15th-best mark in the conference.

-The Lady Railsplitters are making their second trip to Hartsville, South Carolina this season, which will also serve as the host site of the 2017 SAC Championship. Lincoln Memorial went 3-1 at the Coker Spring Tournament February 25-26, beating Bloomsburg, Charleston and Lander while falling to Pfeiffer.

-Lincoln Memorial is ranked fourth in the South Atlantic Conference in batting average (.320), on-base percentage (.394) and slugging percentage (.482), but those numbers have dipped a bit in league action. The Lady Railsplitters have a .282/.344/.400 slash line through four SAC games.

-The Lady Railsplitters have already belted 24 home runs, which rank second in the SAC behind Anderson's 28. At its current pace, Lincoln Memorial would break the single-season home run record of 60 that was established by the 2007 team. Ten different players have hit homers for the Lady Railsplitters, led by Ty-Kella Goins' (Ramseur, N.C.) five and four from Fraley and Moose.

Notes on the Coker:

-The Cobras have been this season's early surprise. After being picked 10th in the SAC preseason coaches poll, Coker has raced out to a 25-9 start. That has already well exceeded last season's 15-win effort and last-place SAC finish.

-Anderson swept the Cobras in their SAC-opening doubleheader last Saturday, but Coker bounced back with a pair of wins over Queens on Wednesday. In game one, the Cobras allowed a run in the top of the first inning before tallying six unanswered runs to capture a 6-1 win. Coker matched that effort with another 6-1 win in game two that was powered by Maria Williamson's 2-for-3 effort with two RBI.

-Coker has been fueled by a dynamite pitching staff that is ranked third in the SAC in earned run average with a 2.14 mark and fifth in batting average against with a .236 clip. Sophomore Taylor Forehand leads the Coker staff with 68.2 innings pitched, but freshman Christine Carver has been the most effective with a 5-2 record, a 2.00 ERA and 55 strikeouts over 49 innings. Sophomore Augusta Jackson and senior Tabitha Allen have been stingy as well with 1.91 and 1.58 ERAs, respectively.

-The Cobras are ranked second in the SAC in hits (281), runs (226), doubles (62), triples (8), RBI (198) and extra-base hits (91). As a team, Coker is batting .306 with a .378 on-base percentage. Those numbers are significantly worse in SAC play, where the Cobras are hitting .235 and reaching base at a .278 clip.

-Infielders Tayler Barcomb and Williamson lead the Cobra attack. Barcomb is the team leader in hits (44), doubles (15), RBI (39), stolen bases (9), batting average (.404) and on-base percentage (.451). Williamson is arguably the most dangerous hitter in the league, as she has compiled a SAC-leading 10 home runs while ranking third in doubles with 11. Her 1.250 slugging percentage in SAC play is the second-best mark in the league.

-Junior infielder Hannah Price has also been solid with a .369 average, eight doubles, four homers and 32 RBI. Sophomore Allyson High has contributed seven doubles, two homers and 23 runs batted in. Aside from the four previously mentioned players, no other everyday player is batting above .300 for the Cobras.

Series History:

-The Lady Railsplitters are an even 5-5 all-time against Coker. Lincoln Memorial is 3-3 in the series since the Cobras joined the SAC prior to the 2014 campaign.

-The two teams have split doubleheaders in each of the past three seasons. The Lady Railsplitters took game one of last season's series at Dorothy Neely Field 4-3 before falling 6-5 in game two.

-The Lady Railsplitters split in Hartsville in 2015 as well. After being blanked in a 3-0 loss in game one, Lincoln Memorial responded with an 8-4 win in game two. Current graduate assistant coach Emilee Solomon belted a grand slam to lead LMU to victory.
