Railsplitters snap Tusculum's 11-game winning streak with 10-4 victory in series opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) and Timmy Wages (Molin, Ill.) homered and were two of six Railsplitters to record multiple hits as Lincoln Memorial (18-15, 9-4 SAC) defeated Tusculum (20-9, 12-4 SAC) 10-4 to snap the Pioneers' 11-game win streak on Friday night at Pioneer Park. The win was also Lincoln Memorial's first over Tusculum in more than three years, as the Pioneers had won the previous five matchups.

Brandon Jean (Franklin, Tenn.) won his fourth straight start and earned his career-best fifth win of the season with 6.1 innings of two-run ball. He held Tusculum's red-hot offense scoreless through the first six innings, scattering just three hits, before the Pioneers finally solved him for two runs in the seventh.

The Railsplitters provided Jean with plenty of run support and pounded 15 hits. Muta Crusoe (Bellwood, Ill.) led the team with three, while Wages and Tyler Adams (Woodstock, Ga.) drove in three runs apiece. Augustine scored three runs to take over the NCAA lead in runs scored.

Tusculum's offense, which came into the game averaging nearly 10 runs per game in SAC play, was held in check most of the night. Nick Lacina and Daulton Martin each doubled as part of two-hit evenings. Jeremy Glore, the team's hits leader, and Daniel Skeen, its RBI leader, combined to go 1-for-9 with four strikeouts.

Ethan Carpenter turned in his worst outing of the season for the Pioneers, allowing seven runs (six earned) in 6.1 innings. He struck out a season-high nine Railsplitters but allowed eight hits and three walks as the senior lost for the first time in five starts.

Augustine kicked off the scoring in the fourth with a solo home run to center. Adams singled home another run in a two-run fifth.

Wages's two-run shot down the left field line in the sixth increased the Railsplitter lead to 5-0.

The Railsplitters broke the game wide open at 9-0 with a four-run seventh. Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) and Wages singled in a run each, and Adams followed suit three batters later with a two-run base knock.

Dante Key and Martin hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom half of the seventh to drive in Tusculum's first runs.

Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) drove in Lincoln Memorial's tenth run with another single.

A pair of run-scoring infield hits by Tusculum cut the Railsplitter lead to 10-4. Chase Randolph (Knoxville, Tenn.) entered in the ninth and struck out three of the four batters he faced, including the final two with the bases loaded, to seal Lincoln Memorial's victory.

The two teams resume the series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. First pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
