The Railsplitters play one more road contest Wednesday against Belmont Abbey before returning home for a weekend series against Carson-Newman.
Game One: Tusculum 4, Lincoln Memorial 3
Wages' two-run double down the left field line in the top of the first inning gave the Railsplitters a quick 2-0 lead, but the team failed to score again until Ewers' solo shot to lead off the top of the eighth. Wages, Ewers and
Russell Clark Wexford, Pa.) finished 2-for-4, while
Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) went 2-for-5.
After a rough first inning, Christian Raasch settled in to allow just two hits over the next six innings. He came back out for the eighth inning but faced just one batter—Ewers—before departing in favor of Zach Slage. Raasch picked up the win to improve to 2-3 on the year.
Ethan Elliott (Knoxville, Tenn.) bounced back from a rough outing one week ago against Catawba to hold the Pioneers to two runs over 6.1 innings. The lefty allowed seven hits and one walk and struck out seven but did not receive a decision.
Tusculum broke through against Elliott with a run in the fourth. Nick Lacina doubled to lead off the inning and scored two batters later on Dante Key's single.
Cole Baxley kick started the Pioneers' seventh inning rally with a leadoff double off Elliott. He came around to score two batters later as Glore singled off Morabito. The go-ahead run then scored on a wild pitch. Nick Lacina later singled off
Cody Hinson (Taylor Ridge, Ill.) to put Tusculum up 4-2.
McKenly Berry worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save of the season.
Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 4, Catawba 2
Morabito held the Pioneers to just three hits and one walk as he pitched a seven-inning complete game to even his record on the day and improve to 5-1 as a starting pitcher. He held the
Pioneers hitless over the final five innings and would have been perfect if not for an Adams error in the fourth. At one point from the second through sixth inning, Morabito struck out 10 of 15 batters.
Meanwhile, Tim Hardy fell to 7-1 as he was outdueled by Morabito. He only allowed four hits, but he also allowed four run (three earned) to score. The lefty also struck out six.
Tusculum scored a run each in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Edison Cabrera doubled to lead off the first and came around to score on an RBI groundout. Key led off the second with a walk, stole second and later scored on Bradley Evans' single. That hit would be the last Morabito allowed.
Adams tied the game in the fifth with a two-run double. The next batter,
Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.), singled him in give the Railsplitters the lead.
Adams increased the Railsplitter lead to 4-2 with another RBI single in the seventh.
