Augustine's walk-off single and Jean's complete-game gem leads Railsplitters in sweep over Carson-Newman

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) knocked a seeing-eye single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to score pinch runner Triston Campbell (Cumming, Ga.) as Lincoln Memorial (21-16, 12-5 SAC) walked off with the 4-3 win to sweep Saturday's doubleheader over rival Carson-Newman (19-19, 7-10 SAC). With the sweep, the Railsplitters won their fourth straight South Atlantic Conference series and moved into sole possession of third place in the conference. The team can move into a tie for first with a win in Sunday's series finale.

Augustine finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in each game to take back the team lead in batting average at .372.

Brandon Jean (Franklin, Tenn.) won his fifth straight start in Lincoln Memorial's 8-2 series-opening victory with his first career nine-inning complete game. The senior righty struck out 10 and improved to 6-3 on the year. He also lowered his season ERA to 4.23. The outing continued Jean's stellar conference performance as he improved to 5-1 with a 3.57 ERA against SAC competition.

Every Railsplitter starter recorded at least one hit in game two, but none were bigger than Timmy Wages' (Molin, Ill.) solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at three and Augustine's walk-off one inning later.

Cade Snapp broke an 0-for-18 slump with a 3-for-7 afternoon. He was the only Eagle to record multiple hits off Jean with a 2-for-4 performance in the first game and added another base knock in game two but did not receive much help from his teammates.

Lincoln Memorial has now won six straight over the Eagles and 12 of 15 dating back to 2012. Carson-Newman has not won a series over the Railsplitters since 2011.

The Railsplitters conclude their series against the Eagles Sunday at 1 p.m. back at Lamar Hennon Field.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 8, Carson-Newman 2

The Railsplitters jumped on Carson-Newman starting pitcher Ryan Eberle early with a run in the first, three in the second and another in the third. Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) led off the first with a single and later came around to score on a Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) groundout.

Carson-Newman committed three of its five errors for the game in the second inning as the Railsplitters increased their lead to 4-0. Tyler Adams (Woodstock, Ga.) walked to lead off the inning, and Hunt joined him on base two batters later courtesy of a Jimmy Rice fielding error. Ewers, the next batter, then doubled down the left field line to score Adams for the first run of the inning. Augustine followed with a sac fly to left to bring home the next run. A bad throw by Snapp in left field allowed Hunt and Ewers to advance. Ewers also ended up scoring on the same play on another throwing error, this time by catcher Gooch Greer.

Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.) singled in Lincoln Memorial's fifth run in the third.

The Railsplitters had opportunities to do even more damage in the first three innings but left the bases loaded twice.

Carson-Newman scored its only two runs in the fifth. The Eagles accounted for three of their six hits for the game in the inning and only mustered one more in the game's final four innings. Brett Langhorne led off the inning with his fourth home run of the year. Trever Lee later singled, and Ryan Addington doubled him in two batters later.

Lincoln Memorial put the game out of reach with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in Augustine in the sixth on a sac fly following a leadoff double. Eberle's wild ways contributed to both runs in the seventh as he threw a ball to first away to allow one run to score and had another come around on a passed ball before departing.

Eberle walked five in 6.1 innings to build upon his sac-leading total. He also hit three batters and uncorked two wild pitches in addition to allowing 10 hits. All eight of Lincoln Memorial's runs were credited to him, although only four were earned as he fell to 2-6 on the year.

Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 4, Carson-Newman 3

Ethan Elliott (Knoxville, Tenn.) continued to struggle in SAC play as he only lasted 3.1 innings to set the shortest outing of his career. The sophomore lefty only gave up two runs but walked two and allowed five hits. He did not pitch a clean inning but was aided early on by double plays in each of the first two innings and a pickoff in the third. Elliott took a no-decision but saw his ERA in conference games grow to 5.68—a stark contrast to his 2.31 mark against all other opponents.

Elliott was staked to a 2-0 lead after three innings due to RBI singles from Muta Crusoe (Bellwood, Ill.) in the second and Clark in the third.

Carson-Newman scored both its runs off Elliott in the fourth. He retired the first batter before surrendering three straight hits to Snapp, Paul Kirby and Greg Jones. Jones' single brought in the first run and knocked Elliott out of the game. Cody Hinson (Taylor Ridge, Ill.) came on in relief and allowed Kirby to score on a groundout before retiring Graham Warren to end the threat.

The Eagles took their first lead of the entire afternoon on a two-out single by Eric Lynch to drive in Addington.

Wages' solo homer with one out in the sixth tied the game back up at three apiece. Prior to the home run, Carson-Newman starting pitcher Will Gardner had retired eight straight.

Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.) came on in relief in the seventh with Eagles on first and second but struck out Addington to end the threat. He picked up his sixth win of the year with Augustine's walk-off.

Gardner pitched well for the Eagles but took the complete game loss to fall to 4-3. He allowed four runs and 11 hits over 6.1 innings and struck out four.

Carson-Newman falls to 0-8 in SAC road contests following its doubleheader sweep.
