Railsplitters hammer Hawks 15-6 to win fourth consecutive match

ROME, Ga. -- The Railsplitters (4-1) churned out a 9-1 run that consumed more than 26 minutes from the tail end of the first quarter to the midway point of the third quarter to power a 15-6 win over the Shorter Hawks (0-5) on Saturday at Ben Brady Field. Lincoln Memorial extended its winning streak to four games with the victory, which is the longest winning streak in the program's brief history.

Adam Golia (Victoria, British Columbia) and Kyle Arcuri (Patchogue, N.Y.) combined for seven goals and five assists to lead the Railsplitters past the winless Hawks. Golia tallied five goals and two assists on nine shot attempts, while Arcuri posted two goals and three assists on six shots. Robert Tucker (Wantagh, N.Y.) contributed two goals and an assist, while seven other players finished with a point for the Railsplitter offense.

Chase Rogers led Shorter with three goals on six shots. Nate Malinowski scored two goals on four shot attempts, while Austin Zumbado collected a goal and an assist. Only two other players produced a point for the Hawks, who have now been outscored 106-23 through their first five matches this season.

Lincoln Memorial took some time to settle into a rhythm offensively, as Shorter struck first on a goal by Malinowski with 8:50 left in the first quarter. The Railsplitters finally broke through at the 6:26 mark on Arcuri's first goal and took the lead just four seconds later on a goal by Hunter Clark (Marietta, Ga.).

Shorter pulled back even less than two minutes later on a goal from Rogers, but the Railsplitters completely dominated the next 25 minutes of the match, reeling off a 9-1 run to take a commanding lead.

Golia scored twice and Arcuri and Nick Borriello (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) pitched in goals to fuel a quick 4-0 flurry that put Lincoln Memorial ahead 6-2 by the 12:43 mark of the second quarter. Zumbado briefly stopped the bleeding and cut the deficit to 6-3 with 12:16 remaining in the half, but the Railsplitters scored four unanswered goals to go into the break with a 10-3 lead. Tucker then added another goal 57 seconds into the third to complete LMU's 9-1 run.

The Hawks didn't get on the board again until Rogers scored off of a William Millwood assist with seven minutes left in the third quarter. The momentum stayed in the Railsplitters' corner, though, as LMU outscored Shorter 4-2 down the closing stretch to complete the lopsided victory.

Billy Kopsky (Smithtown, N.Y.), Chad Walters (Marietta, Ga.), Tylor Justin (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Richie Russo (Wantagh, N.Y.) also chipped in goals for the Railsplitters.

Goalie Joe Medel (Virginia Beach, Va.) and company shut down the Shorter attack, as the Virginia Beach, Va. native allowed just six goals with six saves to improve to 4-1 on the season. Garry Robinson was pegged with the loss for Shorter after allowing 12 goals with 14 saves over 45 minutes of action.

The Railsplitters outshot Shorter 47-25, including a massive 19-5 advantage in the second quarter, when they outscored the Hawks 7-1. LMU also fired off 13 shots in the fourth quarter compared to only five for the home team. Thirty-four of the Railsplitters' 47 shots landed on target.

The Railsplitters also finished a perfect 17-for-17 on clears and collected 33 groundballs compared to only 21 for the Hawks. Lincoln Memorial went 2-for-6 on man-up opportunities and held the Hawks scoreless on their four man-up chances.

Clark led LMU with eight groundball recoveries, while Golia and Josh Hernandez (Middletown, N.Y.) finished with five apiece.

The Railsplitters return to the LMU Lacrosse Complex to host Florida Southern at 3:30 on Wednesday.
