NEWBERRY, S.C. – The LMU women's lacrosse team made history today with their first-ever South Atlantic Conference win in their 15-9 victory at Newberry.
Casey Kelly (Ellenwood, Ga.) and
Kennedy Buechner (Stafford, Va.) led LMU with four goals apiece. Kelly also had four ground balls and four draw controls.
Amara Moss (Woodbridge, Va.),
Heather Roache (Vero Beach, Fla.) and
Zoe Zervos (Ithaca, N.Y.) each netted two goals and
Jasmin Click (Clermont, Fla.) had a goal in the win.
Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) had eight saves. Moss and
Melissa Saganich (Clinton, Tenn.) also had four ground balls each.
Newberry was led by Rachel Dillon's three goals. Brandy Bowman had 19 saves in cage for the Wolves.
LMU almost doubled the shot attempts of Newberry, outshooting them by a 41-22 margin. They had 34 shots on goal to NC's 17, had 28 ground balls to 18 by Newberry, and both teams had 13 draw controls each.
Dillon put Newberry ahead 1-0 a little over a minute into the game. LMU then went on a 5-0 run with goals by Kelly, Buechner (twice), Moss and Zervos. After Newberry scored again, LMU once again scored five unanswered goals to take a 10-2 lead into halftime.
A hat trick by Kelly along with goals from Moss and Roache would highlight the second half, in which LMU held off a rally by the Wolves to pick up the 15-9 win.
With the win, LMU improves to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in the SAC. They host Ursuline Monday at 4 p.m. at the LMU Lacrosse Complex.
