Eagles entertain Lady Railsplitters for SAC doubleheader on Tuesday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lady Railsplitters (21-16, 4-8 SAC) make the short trip to Jefferson City, Tennessee on Tuesday to challenge the rival Carson-Newman Eagles (30-10, 9-3 SAC) for a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at The Vick. Game one is set for 2 p.m. while game two will follow at approximately 4 p.m.
 
Lincoln Memorial split its third straight SAC doubleheader on Saturday with a 7-4 loss and an 8-4 win over the Queens Royals at Dorothy Neely Field. The Lady Railsplitters are currently in eighth place in the league standings with eight games left in the regular-season schedule. Carson-Newman is tied for second place in the SAC, but has hit a bit of a bump in the road. After starting conference play 8-0 and reeling off 15 straight wins from March 5 to April 1, the Eagles have lost three of their last four games and were swept by Coker on Saturday.

-The Lady Railsplitters scattered 11 hits in game one against Queens, but left nine runners stranded on base in a 7-4 setback. Queens jumped out to a 5-1 lead through three innings and kept Lincoln Memorial at bay to win its second straight game in the series. Allie Jones went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a home run, while Dakotah Fraley and Ty-Kella Goins added two hits apiece in the loss. Justice Smith allowed just one earned run and five hits in 4.1 innings of relief for Brianna Taylor, who was chased from the game after giving up five hits and five runs in 2.2 innings.
 
-Goins, Jones, Ashlea Hunter, Jennifer Moose and Meredith Johnson each hit home runs as the Lady Railsplitters bounced back with an 8-4 win in game two on Saturday. Moose finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Lady Railsplitters' 14-hit effort. Jones went 2-for-3 to finish 5-for-7 in the doubleheader, while Goins went 3-for-3 to record five hits in the twinbill. Taylor rebounded from the game-one loss by holding the Royals to six hits and two earned runs over 6.2 innings of work.
 
-After smashing seven home runs in the doubleheader against Queens, the Lady Railsplitters are ranked second in the league with 33 this season. That is the seventh-most in the program's single-season history.
 
-Lincoln Memorial is currently in eighth place in the SAC standings with eight conference games remaining. The top-eight teams in the final league standings earn bids to the 2017 SAC Championship, which is being hosted by Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina April 27-30.
 
-Goins recorded her 13th and 14th multi-hit games of the season in the doubleheader against Queens, finishing the day 5-for-7 with a double and a home run to increase her team-leading batting average to .389. The Ramseur, North Carolina native has a .400/.432/.700 slash line in SAC play, ranking 11th in the league in batting average and seventh in slugging percentage. Goins' 28 total bases against SAC opponents are the fourth-most in the SAC, while her three home runs are also the fourth-most in conference action.
 
-Fraley extended her reached base streak to 17 games against Queens. The Walkersville, Maryland product went 2-for-4 with a home run in game one and added a double and a run scored in game two. Fraley is hitting .354 this season with a .575 on-base percentage, the 15th-highest mark in the South Atlantic Conference.
 
-Moose and Jones are also hitting over .350 after big weekend series. Moose went 0-for-2 in game one against Queens, but drew two walks, and later piled up four hits with a double and a home run in game two to push her average to .361. Jones had a home run in both games and finished 5-for-7 that afternoon to lift her average to .358.
 
Notes on the Eagles:
 
-Carson-Newman's offense was completely shut down by Coker on Saturday, as the Cobras captured a 2-0 win in game one and completed the sweep with a 4-0 win in game two. The Eagles were limited to just two hits by Augusta Jackson and Tabitha Allen in the early game while a trio of Coker pitchers held Carson-Newman to three singles in the late game. The Eagles also combined to commit six errors in the doubleheader, including four in game two.
 
-The Eagles have been kept off the scoreboard in three of their last four games. Prior to that, Carson-Newman racked up at least five runs 11 times during its 15-game winning streak. That stretch included SAC sweeps over Queens, Mars Hill, Catawba and Newberry.
 
-A quartet of freshmen lead the Eagles offensively. Catcher Abby Fiessinger has compiled a team-leading 53 hits, .434 batting average, .558 on-base percentage and .680 slugging percentage, racking up five doubles, seven homer, 24 RBI and 24 walks. Pitcher Lacie Rinus is batting .357 with nine doubles and 27 RBI, while infielder Taylor Scott leads the team in doubles (10) and RBI (33) to go along with five dingers. KaraLynne Levi has also accounted for 10 doubles with 29 RBI.
 
-Junior Kristen Toppel and senior Allison Webster are the only upperclassmen with more than 20 hits for the Eagles. Toppel is batting .315 and is ranked third in the SAC with 20 stolen bases. Webster has a .300 batting average with a pair of home runs and 18 RBI.
 
-As a team, Carson-Newman is batting .309 with a .411 on-base percentage and a .460 slugging percentage, ranking in the top four in the SAC in each of those categories. The Eagles have pretty similar numbers in SAC play with a .306/.395/.460 slash line.
 
-The Eagle pitching staff is arguably the best in the conference, as Carson-Newman leads the SAC in earned run average (.176) and batting average against (.206). They have been even better in league play with a 1.40 ERA and a .204 batting average against.
 
-Rinus and Webster have eerily similar stat lines this season. Rinus has compiled a 15-5 record over 126 innings with 145 strikeouts and a 1.22 ERA. Webster is also 15-5 over 120 innings of work with 125 strikeouts and a 2.22 ERA. Rinus leads the SAC in batting average against with a stingy .198 mark, while Webster is slightly more forgiving with a .206 mark.
 
-The Eagles have compiled a 19-3 home record this season. Carson-Newman has won 12 consecutive home games dating back to an 8-2 loss to Erskine on February 22. The team is hitting .332 and reaching base at a .445 clip at home compared to a .284 average and a .374 on-base percentage on the road.
 
Series History:
 
-The Lady Railsplitters are 20-47 all-time against Carson-Newman in a series that dates all the way back to 1986. The Eagles have particularly dominated of late, winning 17 of the last 22 head-to-head meetings.
 
-Lincoln Memorial split last season's regular-season series at Dorothy Neely Field, dropping a 3-0 decision in game one before rebounding with an 8-0 win in game two. In game one, Webster relinquished just three singles. Taylor was solid as well, but took the loss despite holding the Eagles to four hits and one earned run over seven innings. The Lady Railsplitters scored seven runs through the first three innings in game two to salvage the split. Kristen McAndrew went 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Hunter and Moose added two hits apiece.
