Quick Hits
- Lincoln Memorial suffered a 3-0 loss at Coker on Friday night and a 3-1 setback at Newberry on Saturday to see its losing streak reach three after a 4-0 start. The loss at Coker was particularly surprising, as the Lady Railsplitters were 8-0 all-time against the Cobras, who had never won more than one set in a match against Lincoln Memorial in any of the previous eight meetings.
- Attack errors ultimately doomed Lincoln Memorial in both losses last weekend. The Lady Railsplitters committed 28 errors and hit .026 in the defeat at Coker, and followed that up by making 29 miscues against Newberry. Prior to those two matches, the Lady Railsplitters had not made more than 23 errors in a game all season.
- Despite those offensive inefficiencies, the Lady Railsplitters could have easily walked out of Eleazer Arena with a win over Newberry on Saturday if they could have finished off late leads. Lincoln Memorial had a 21-19 advantage in set two, but saw the Wolves end the frame on a 6-1 run. The Lady Railsplitters were up 23-19 in the third set, but Newberry ripped off a 6-0 run to take a 2-1 lead. Finally, LMU had a 24-21 cushion in the fourth set before committing four consecutive attack errors to hand Newberry the 26-24 match-clinching win.
- Tuesday's match concludes a five-match road trip for the Lady Railsplitters, who return to Mary Mars Gymnasium for home games against Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne, Francis Marion and Anderson over the next two weekends.
- Senior outside hitter
Kiera Holland produced a career-high 23 kills in the loss at Newberry while adding 19 digs and a pair of aces. Holland, who is currently ranked second in the SAC in kills per set with 3.67, has tallied at least 15 kills in four of her seven appearances this season.
- Junior libero
Erica Whiteaker continues to lead the conference and the nation in digs per set with 8.41. Whiteaker has been even more productive in SAC play with a mind-boggling 9.24 scoops per frame. She has accounted for over 10 digs per set in two of her last three appearances.
- Lincoln Memorial will be trying to avoid losing four straight matches for the first time since the 2015 team did so from September 12-22. Coincidentally, Carson-Newman was the final piece of that four-game losing streak, beating the Lady Railsplitters in five sets at Holt Fieldhouse.
Know the Opponent
- After finishing last in the SAC a season ago with a 3-27 overall record and a 2-20 mark in league play, the rejuvenated Eagles look to have put the 2016 campaign completely in the rearview mirror. Carson-Newman enters Tuesday's match with almost double the wins from last season. The Eagles are currently in third place in the league courtesy of victories over Tusculum, Mars Hill and Coker. Carson-Newman also took Newberry to five sets on Friday night.
- The Eagles made quick work of Coker on Saturday afternoon, dispatching of the Cobras in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-20. Led by Marnie Streeter's 12 kills and Megan Oldenburger's 10 kills, Carson-Newman hit .199 as a team and outhit the Cobras 42-33.
- Tuesday will serve as the home opener for the Eagles, who have played their first seven matches outside of Jefferson City. It also begins a six-game home stand for Carson-Newman that won't end until a nonconference match against Francis Marion on September 30.
- Carson-Newman is ranked second-to-last in the SAC in kills per set with 11.15, while the team's .169 attack percentage is the sixth-highest mark in the league. The Eagles have been a bit better of late, averaging 11.38 kills per set after accounting for just 8.91 through the first three matches of the season.
- Sophomore outside hitter Marnie Streeter has been one of the most productive players in the SAC so far this season, ranking fifth in the league in kills per set with 3.59, a figure that jumps to a league-best 4.25 against SAC opponents. Streeter has two 20-kill performances on her resume, reaching that mark against Tusculum and Mars Hill.
- Oldenburger, a freshman outside hitter, has accounted for 2.57 kills per set, while seven other Eagles are chipping in at least one kill per frame. Oldenburger has double-digit kills in three of her last four appearances.
- Senior Anna Patton and freshman Madison Rademacher split setting duties for the Eagles, with Patton leading that duo with 4.30 assists per set. Sophomore libero Morgan Ballard is also among the national leaders in digs per set with 6.85. She established a new SAC record with an absurd 58 digs in a four-set match at Mars Hill last week.
Head-to-Head
The Lady Railsplitters and Eagles will be teeing it up for the 51st time on Tuesday. Lincoln Memorial enters the match with a 32-18 advantage in the series, which includes three consecutive wins. Lincoln Memorial is 13-10 all-time at Holt Fieldhouse, where the last two meetings have required five sets. In fact, four of the last five matches between Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman in Jefferson City have gone the distance, including the Lady Railsplitters' 3-2 win there last season.
