Railsplitters rally for 8-7 win at Erskine to push winning streak to five

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team used a five-run seventh inning to erase a 7-3 deficit at Erskine (5-3) and win 8-7 Wednesday afternoon at Grier Field. The Railsplitters (6-2) extended their winning streak to five.

Muta Crusoe and Nate Stinson took part in all eight LMU runs and accounted for five of the team's nine hits. Crusoe finished 2-for-4 with a walk, double, two runs scored and three RBI. Stinson also drove in three in a 3-for-5 day with a double, run scored and stolen base.

No other Railsplitter recorded more than one hit, though Tyler Adams, Logan Augustine and Marco Rios each reached base three times. Augustine and Rios each went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks while Adams walked thrice.

Matt Mullenbach was staked to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning after back-to-back RBI doubles by Crusoe and Stinson. Adams led off with a walk, and Timmy Wages followed with a single. Crusoe doubled in Adams for the first run, and Stinson's plated the next two.

That lead didn't last as Drew Yniesta homered in the bottom half of the inning, and the Flying Fleet plated two more runs in the third on a fielder's choice and an Adams error. Erskine took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back solo shots from Billy Ryan and Isaiah Lewis.

Mullenbach was pulled right after and ended the day with five runs allowed (four earned) on nine hits and a walk in 4.1 innings. Jake Grenus got the final two outs of the inning and continued into the sixth but ran into trouble.

Erskine took the lead on a two-run homer by Chaz Davey following a leadoff single. Chase Randolph relieved Grenus two batters later and shut out the Flying Fleet from that point forward with 3.2 no-hit innings and five strikeouts. The effort earned the righty his first win of the season.

LMU's five-run seventh started with a Crusoe two-run single with the bases loaded followed by a Stinson RBI base knock. With Joe Stucky batting, Stinson stole second. A passed ball then allowed Crusoe to score the tying run and Stinson to advance. Stucky eventually grounded out to push across Stinson's go-ahead run.

Randolph struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.

Ryan was a thorn in LMU's side all day by reaching in all five plate appearances with two hits, three walks and a stolen base. Yniesta and Davey also each notched two of Erskine's 13 hits.

The Railsplitters will return home over the weekend to face Lake Erie at Lamar Hennon Field. The three-game set will kick off Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
