Women's lacrosse nets 19 goals in season opening win over Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Lincoln Memorial University women's lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals to close out the first half and held off a late Palm Beach Atlantic rally for the 19-13 win Friday evening.

It was the season opener for LMU (1-0) and the program opener for Palm Beach Atlantic (0-1).

Erin DePaul scored twice and Casey Kelly and Kennedy Buechner each had goals as LMU rolled out to the early 4-3 lead. After the Sailfish scored twice to take a 5-4 lead with nine minutes left, Amara Moss scored three goals, Kelly two and Buechner notched a goal as LMU scored six unanswered goals to grab a 10-5 lead at the half.

The teams each scored four goals each before PBA scored with 15:49 left to cut the score to 14-10. The Sailfish then went scoreless for the next 14:10 while LMU scored five straight goals to extend the lead to 19-10. Palm Beach Atlantic then scored three late goals but it was not enough as the Lady Railsplitters picked up the 19-13 win.

Kelly led LMU with six goals. Buechner had five goals and an assist while DePaul and Moss each had four goals and two assists. Zoe Zervos picked up six ground balls while LMU goalie Shannon Novak had 13 saves. Moss also had a career-high and program record 12 draw controls..

Grace Bartlinski led Palm Beach Atlantic with six goals and an assist. Kate LeBlanc and Dom Barber had two goals apiece while Morgan LeBlanc, Alysssa Yates and Julia Del Carmen had a goal each. Del Carmen also had three assists to lead the Sailfish. Yates and Taylor Huntley had three ground balls each and Dani Brickhouse had seven saves while giving up 19 goals.

- LMU moved to 2-2 in season openers. In both of the season opening wins the Lady Railsplitters scored 19 goals.

- The 19 goals tied the program record for goals in a game. LMU defeated Montreat 19-2 to open the 2016 season and they defeated Mt. St. Joseph 19-4 last season.

- The 21 draws won tied the program record for a single game. LMU also won 21 draws against Asbury on March 8, 2016.

- Amara Moss became the first LMU player to score 60 or more career goals.
