Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Wingate holds off late LMU rally, 11-10

WINGATE, N.C. – The Lincoln Memorial University women's lacrosse team had the lead cut to one goal late, but were unable to get over the hump as Wingate held on for the 11-10 win at Graham Gill Field.

LMU (5-5, 1-3 South Atlantic Conference) had rallied from three goals down to tie the game at 8-8 mid-way through the second half, only to see Wingate (3-9, 2-2 SAC) pull ahead by two goals. The Lady Railsplitters again cut it to 10-9 but the Bulldogs scored again late. LMU scored again in the final minute but Wingate controlled the draw and escaped with the 11-10 win.

Kennedy Buechner led LMU with four goals and Casey Kelly had three goals. Erin DePaul chipped in two goals while Amara Moss scored one goal.

After Wingate scored at the 22:35 mark, Buechner scored her first goal a minute later to tie the game. Following another Bulldog score Buechner again found the back of the net to even the score once again. Wingate then went on a 4-0 run before Buechner picked up her third goal of the match off the free position shot with 8:52 remaining.

Casey Kelly then took the ball on the ensuing possession and was fouled. She hit the free position shot to cut the lead to 6-4. Wingate would score again 30 seconds later and then neither team could generate much offense for the rest of the half until Buechner scored her fourth goal of the game with 1:16 remaining to cut the lead to 7-5.

After the Bulldogs scored in their first possession of the second half, LMU had back to back goals to cut the lead to 8-7. Moss won the draw following Wingate's score and took it in for her 33rd goal of the year. On the ensuing possession, Kelly did likewise as she also won the draw and promptly scored with 28:50 remaining.

The Lady Railsplitters had four shots evade the net but their defense stiffened and held Wingate scoreless for the next several minutes. After a missed Bulldog shot at the 20:57 mark, goalie Shannon Novak picked up the ground ball and eventually worked it to Buechner, who made the successful clear. She then found DePaul open a few seconds later and the freshman scored to tie the game at 8-8.

The Bulldogs eventually would score twice more over the next seventeen minutes to take the 10-8 lead. DePaul would cut that lead back to one with her 26th goal of the season at the 3:32 mark. The Lady Railsplitters were unable to get the ball back before Wingate scored with 1:23 remaining to go up by two goals. Casey Kelly was able to eventually get the ball on the next possession and scored with 22 seconds remaining, but the Bulldogs won the ensuing draw and held on for the 11-10 win.

Moss led the team with three draws, while Kelly won two. Novak led the team with five ground balls and also grabbed 13 saves.

LMU led in shots (32-28) and saves (13-11). WU held the advantage in draws (15-7) and ground balls (13-12). The Bulldogs had 17 turnovers to 13 by the Lady Railsplitters.

The Lady Railsplitters will return home to host Shorter Tuesday at 4 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played on March 14, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
