HONOLULU, Hawaii — Powered by a .667 hitting percentage and limiting the Lincoln Memorial University men's volleyball team to just a .051 clip, No. 2-ranked Hawai'i handed the Railsplitters their worst lop-sided loss of the season in a 3-0, 12-25, 14-25, 12-25, sweep inside Stan Sheriff Center Friday night.
The Railsplitters (7-5) were led by
Evan Cory and
Jordan Walley's five kills apiece, while
Jacob Titus had a team-high two digs coming off the bench.
AJ Risavy had 11 assists and
Ryan Foy had seven.
LMU hurt itself with 17 attack errors and 11 service errors, while the Rainbow Warriors had nine service aces to the Railsplitters' two. Hawai'i also had 37 kills to LMU's 20, and then the home team had 10.5 blocks while holding the nation's second-best blocker,
Pedro Carvalho, and his team without a block in the match.
Hawai'i (9-0) cruised to its ninth straight sweep of the season behind five point leaders in Colton Cowell's (12.5), Rado Parapunov (12.0), Stijn Van Tilburg (10.5), Patrick Casman (7.5) and Dalton Solgrig (6.0). Joe Worsley had a match-high 25 assists, while Solbrig had six blocks and Colton Cowell had five. Cowell also led the match with nine kills and Van Tilburg had eight.
The Rainbow Warriors got off to a rapid start, scoring the first six of seven points to force a quick LMU timeout. Walley smacked down a kill out of it, but Hawai'i, who sported a mind-boggling .769 hitting percentage compared to LMU's .111 clip, didn't let up. The Railsplitters used a three-point run — their largest of the first set — to come within six (9-15); however, from there, the home squad outscored LMU 10-3 to take the first set and 1-0 match lead.
LMU took its first lead of the match early into the second set (3-2), but Hawai'i answered with a 7-1 run to prompt
John Cash to signal for a timeout. Again, Walley came out of the brief break with a kill, and then the Rainbow Warriors kept pressing down on the gas. Hawai'i somehow upped its hitting clip to .778 in set No. 2 as the Railsplitters were still unable to find a groove, hitting .091to find themselves in a 2-0 match deficit, which ended via LMU's 11th attack error through two.
The Railsplitters' misfortune continued in the third set, where the Rainbow Warriors rattled off an 8-0 run to start it. The Railsplitters first point came via a ball handling penalty against Hawai'i before Carvalho put down the first offensive point with a kill (2-9). But, LMU was never able to score more than one point at a time, until back-to-back Hawai'i attack errors awarded the Railsplitters consecutive points (9-22). At that point, LMU was too far out to catch up to the red-hot Rainbow Warriors.
