HARROGATE, Tenn. — The Lincoln Memorial women's lacrosse team will venture to Georgetown, Ky., in search of its first win of the season when it faces off with Georgetown College Wednesday evening. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The Lady Railsplitters are coming off a disappointing 16-5 loss at Young Harris last Friday. Head Coach
Caitlyn Corace is counting on her team to bounce back after the breakdown in the season opener.
"I think Georgetown will be a good test for us, especially with games coming up against Shepherd and Davis & Elkins," said Corace. "We have to bounce back from Friday's loss and show Georgetown who LMU lacrosse truly is."
The next seven days will be critical for Corace's squad with Wednesday's match followed by a game at Shepherd on Saturday and a quick turnaround for a game at Davis & Elkins next Monday.
Georgetown is coming off a season-opening win against first-year program Berry College, rolling up 21 goals in a 21-3 victory. Avery Blackmon totaled 14 points in the game with six goals and eight assists and leads their offensive attack.
"She plays in the midfield so she is all over the field," noted Corace. "I think we have to do a good job of keeping her in check and be aware of her and make adjustments. We have to be aware that she is someone they look to and be heads up about her."
In last Friday's match, LMU mostly played without last season's leading scorer
Amara Moss, who saw very limited action due to a foot injury. Missing Moss put the scoring burden squarely on
Casey Kelly, who scored twice.
"Friday we were a little short depth wise with Moss limited and one of our freshman midfielders out with an injury," said Corace. "We'll have some of our injured players returning Wednesday so we'll be in better shape. We'll see how the rest of this week goes as far as Amara is concerned."
Despite the lopsided score against Young Harris, LMU held a decided advantage in the face-offs won category.
"This week we are focusing on the clear because we won the draw control battle," Corace said. "The score doesn't show it but I thought we played well on defense. We just did not get time to regroup and catch our breath in the defensive zone.
"Offensively there were some things that we did well, but we just didn't connect on them," continued Corace. "We had plays where we made the right cuts and didn't catch the ball on the pass or made the right cuts and didn't go all the way in for the shot. We are focusing on execution the next few days in practice."
Coming off the loss, Corace indicated that the team has looked inward and is ready to get back on the field and right the ship.
"We had a really good film session Sunday and the girls see what has to be done," she said. "They came in with notes and I think they are just ready to go. We see what went wrong and we want to fix it. We do not want this one game to define how our team plays as a whole. It's a new week."
