GEORGETOWN, Ky. — The LMU women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2019 season with a resounding 16-11 victory over Georgetown College on Wednesday night.
Sophomore attacker
Erin DePaul led the way for the Lady Railsplitters, scoring a career-high seven goals. Senior midfielder
Amara Moss tallied her first goals of the season, scoring three times, while
Casey Kelly added two scores.
Melanie Cascio scored her first two goals of the season, and
Jasmin Click and
Kelly Csenar pitched in with one goal apiece. Goalie
Micayla Starnes got the win in goal.
LMU jumped out quickly by taking an 11-6 halftime lead and kept the pressure on in the second half to seal the win.
"Our defense really put pressure on their attackers," commented Head Coach
Caitlyn Corace. "We forced them to turn the ball over and Melanie did a fantastic job in the draw circle and hustling through midfield."
The performance by DePaul paced the offensive attack.
"Erin was able to find holes in their defense and did a great job finishing her shots," said Corace.
Also bolstering the offense was the return of Moss, who played sparingly in the season-opening loss at Young Harris due to injury.
"Amara did a great job driving to the goal," pointed out Corace. "She made hard cuts that made her teammates able to find her in the middle for the shot."
The Lady Railsplitters will get little time to celebrate as they continue the season-opening road trip with a Saturday tilt against Shepherd University in Shelpherdstown, W.V. followed by a Monday game at Davis & Elkins College.
