ELKINS, W.V. — Lincoln Memorial's women's lacrosse team used a balanced scoring attack and a stingy defense to crush Davis & Elkins 15-4 on Monday in Elkins, W.V. The win was the third straight for the Lady Railsplitters after a season-opening loss at Young Harris.
Monday's win also capped a four-game, season-opening road trip that saw LMU put together only its second three-game winning streak in the five-year program history.
Senior midfielder
Amara Moss and freshman attacker
Kelly Csenar led the offensive onslaught with four goals each while sophomore
Erin DePaul continued her torrid offensive output with three more goals, giving her 13 tallies in four games.
Kennedy Buechner connected for two goals and
Rachel Bernhardt and
Sierra Landsman contributed one goal each to complete the LMU scoring.
Goalie
Micayla Starnes was again stellar in goal, holding Davis & Elkins to only one-second half goal.
Moss got the scoring started early with her first goal less than two minutes into the contest. After the Senators tied the game, Csenar, Buechner, DePaul and Moss all scored to build the lead to 5-1 at the 18:00 mark of the first half. After a Davis & Elkins goal, Moss, DePaul and Csenar built the lead to 8-2. LMU led at the half 9-3.
The offensive fireworks continued in the second half with consecutive goals from Moss, DePaul, Csenar twice, Bernhardt and Landsman. Davis & Elkins closed out the scoring with a goal at the 1:59 mark to produce the final result, 15-4.
"The girls did a great job of coming out fast right out of the gate," said Head Coach
Caitlyn Corace. "We shared the ball really well on offense and fed the ball into the middle for some nice assists."
In addition to her four goals, Csenar also assisted on goals by Moss and Landsman.
Jasmin Click also chipped in with two assists.
With Moss and DePaul continuing to pour in goals, LMU will present some headaches for opposing defenses along the way.
"Erin has really found her groove early on the attack," commented Corace. "Her consistency has been a key for us in every game.
"Amara is getting back on track," she continued. "She has been looking better in each game."
The three-goal effort by DePaul caps off a big opening week of the season for her. Earlier on Monday, she was named the SAC AstroTurf Offensive Player of the Week.
The three-game winning streak is the second in program history. The first came near the end of the 2017 season when LMU defeated Brevard, Mount St. Joseph and Lees-McRae.
"The three-game winning streak is a testament to the girl's hard work," Corace said. "We are excited to get back and open up at home next week."
The Lady Railsplitters will open the LMU Lacrosse Complex March 5 at 1 p.m. when Walsh University comes to town.
