Railsplitters crush Eagles 16-6 to complete second SAC sweep of season

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial baseball team completed one of the more lopsided South Atlantic Conference sweeps in recent memory on Monday afternoon with a 16-6 win over the Carson-Newman Eagles at the Silver Diamond Complex.

The Railsplitters (15-8, 7-2 SAC) racked up 14 hits and scored in all but the fourth and eighth innings to notch their second SAC sweep in just the third conference series of the season. Lincoln Memorial did so while outscoring Carson-Newman (17-7, 2-3 SAC) by a combined 34-14 margin, moving to 14-1 in its last 15 games against the Eagles. The Railsplitters never trailed at any point in the three-game series.

Eight of LMU's nine starters recorded at least one hit. Nate Stinson went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a three-run home run, Will Reddick had a grand slam to highlight a 2-for-4 effort at the plate, Dalton Dedas drove in three runs while going 2-for-6 at the plate, and Seth Hunt, Henry Moore and Chris Salvey added two hits apiece.

Two-out hitting played a big role offensively for the Railsplitters, who collected seven two-out hits and scored eight of their 16 runs with two outs on the board.

The Railsplitters put a run up in each of the first three innings and really never let off the gas.

Hunt was hit by a pitch, Tyler Adams reached via an error and Salvey was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out in the top of the first. Stinson put the Railsplitters on the board with a sac fly, but Dalton Long limited the damage to only a single run by inducing a fly out in the next at-bat.

Carson-Newman answered in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI single from Kilian Daughtry to tie the game at a run apiece, but the Railsplitters brought home a run in the second and third to extend the lead to 3-1.

Dedas dropped in a two-out single in shallow left center to score Alex Allen, who got the Railsplitters going with a single, in the second frame, while Reddick drove in another run with a sac fly in the third.

The Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the third with a leadoff home run from John Sharpe, cutting the deficit to 3-2 at the end of three.

Long briefly silenced the Railsplitters after that, setting down six straight batters before the visitors sparked a two-out rally in the fifth. Stinson singled to get things started, while Reddick drew a four-pitch walk to put two runners on. Moore then came through with a single back up the middle to push the lead to 4-2 and chase Long from the game.

Another solo shot, this time from Ethan Goforth, brought the Eagles back within a run in the bottom of the fifth. However, Lincoln Memorial again responded in a big way with a four-run sixth frame. Salvey's two-out single back up the middle put the first run on the board and placed two runners on base for Stinson, who demolished a 1-0 pitch over the left-field wall to increase the lead to 8-3.

Some more two-out hitting kept it rolling for the Railsplitters in the seventh inning. With no runners on base, Stucky and Hunt walked to put two runners on for Dedas, who came through with a double into the gap in right center to make it a 10-3 game.

Carson-Newman finally got something going in the bottom of the seventh, stringing together five straight hits, including RBI singles from Tyler Thompson and Alan Silva, to put two runs on the board. The Eagles threatened to do further damage with the bases loaded and no outs, but Devin Morris struck out back-to-back batters and induced a fly out to limit the damage.

The Railsplitters then blew the game completely open in the ninth inning, scoring six runs to extend the lead to 16-5. With the bases loaded, Salvey singled to left field to bring a run home. Tanner Head then reached via the Eagles' fifth error of the game to plate another run before Reddick obliterated a grand slam over the left-field fall to cap the scoring.

Carson-Newman clawed for a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Charlie Brown RBI single but Matt Walczak induced a fly out to end the game and complete the sweep.

Eli Wright went four-plus innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts before giving way to Hudson Widrig, who picked up the win to improve to 2-0 after holding the Eagles scoreless through two innings of relief.

Morris was also vital down the closing stretch, striking out four without a walk across two scoreless innings of relief.

Winners of nine of their last 11 games, the Railsplitters will look to keep it rolling on Tuesday when they host Virginia-Wise for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Lamar Hennon Field.
