HARROGATE, Tenn. – Chris Salvey hit a pair of solo home runs while Hank Moore delivered the go-ahead, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the Railsplitters to their fifth consecutive victory with a 7-6 win over Virginia-Wise on Tuesday at Lamar Hennon Field.
After combining for 34 runs in its weekend sweep at Carson-Newman, Lincoln Memorial (16-8) struggled to sustain any rallies against a quintet of Virginia-Wise (6-11) pitchers.
The Cavaliers took advantage of that and scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-4 lead. But Salvey led off the bottom of that inning with a solo shot – his second of the game – before pinch hitter
Grady Wright tripled to bring the potential winning run to the plate with one out.
Moore took advantage of that opportunity, lacing his second home run of the season over the left-field wall to put the Railsplitters in the lead for good.
Virginia-Wise threatened in the top of the ninth, using a leadoff walk and a single from Bret Roberts to put two runners on with no outs. However,
Bryson Sullivan worked out of the jam thanks to some nifty defense, as second baseman
Marco Rios snagged a liner off the bat of Tyler Blaum and tagged out the runner at second. Sullivan then induced a fly out in the next at-bat to end the game.
Four different players had multiple hits for the Railsplitters, who finished with 11 as a team.
Dalton Dedas went 3-for-4 with three singles, while Salvey connected on his fifth and sixth home runs of the season.
Nate Stinson had two doubles with two RBI and a run scored, while Moore went 2-for-4 as well.
The Cavaliers were in control early after scoring three runs in the top of the second off LMU starter
Ben Wiley. Brock Smith's RBI single put the first run on the board, while Roberts drove in another run with a single. Smith accounted for the final run of the inning as well, scoring on a sac fly from Blaum.
Stinson led off the home half of the second inning with a double and later scored on a perfectly executed double steal to cut the Cavaliers' lead to 3-1.
The Railsplitters tied the game in the bottom of the third with a two-run double from Stinson, which scored
Seth Hunt and Dedas after that duo led off the inning with back-to-back singles.
Patrick Queener kept the score knotted at 3-3 with a nearly flawless relief effort as the righty faced the minimum through his first four frames, allowing just a one-out walk in the top of the seventh, while Salvey put the Railsplitters in front in the bottom of the sixth with the first of his two home runs.
The Cavaliers finally broke through against Queener in the top of the eighth, leading off the inning with a double from Blaum and a run-scoring single from Dawson Cagle, which tied the game at 4-4.
Jake Grenus was then brought in from the bullpen. After a bunt advanced the go-ahead run into scoring position, Grenus issued a walk and allowed a double to Tristan Peccerelli. David Thomas, who drew the walk, later scored on a passed ball to put the Cavaliers ahead 6-4.
That led to the Railsplitters' late-game heroics from Salvey, Wright and Moore.
Grenus picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season while Sullivan notched his first save of the 2019 campaign.
Roberts paced Virginia-Wise with a pair of singles. Blaum, Peccerelli and Smith added doubles for the Cavaliers, who finished with eight hits as a team.
Nate Thompson was saddled with the loss after surrendering the two home runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Railsplitters hit the road yet again this weekend to face Lenoir-Rhyne for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series in Hickory, N.C. First pitch in game one is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
