Quick Hits
-While the schedule shows these are the final two non-conference doubleheaders, the Lady Railsplitters (18-4) are hopeful to reschedule their pair of games versus Columbus State, which was slated for Friday, March 8, but was canceled due to the non-stop rain that swept through over the weekend.
-The last time out, LMU continued its winning streak, pushing it to eight consecutive, along with four straight home sweeps, with one of North Greenville University Thursday before having a nice little break ahead of a six-game week and the start of conference play.
-LMU rustled away the region doubleheader win of the Crusaders, featuring a pair of gusty pitching performances from
Bailey Griffith (8-2) and
Faith Howe (5-2) and
Sierra Hucklebee's 21st RBI of the season, turning into the ninth-inning, game two victory.
-Another freshman in
McKenzie Henry put the Lady Railsplitters in position of the game two win — and the sweep following the 4-1 game one win — when she blasted her team-leading seventh home run to knot the score at 3-all. It then just took two extra innings for LMU to secure its eighth straight win and fourth consecutive home sweep.
-Those three RBI kept Henry in the conference lead with 28 RBI, along with tied for seventh in all of Division II, while she is now second in the conference and tied for eighth in D2 home runs with the seven.
-Through 22 games, the Lady Railsplitters are 196-for-569 at the plate with a .344 batting average, 170 runs scored, 149 RBI, 52 doubles, eight triples, 20 home runs, 83 walks and 19 hit-by-pitches plus a .440 on-base-percentage.
-The pair of wins put head coach
Ritchie Richardson 12 games away from his 1,000th win. Richardson amassed a 946-339-2 record on the NAIA level, while his record thus far at LMU is 42-36-0 for an impressive 988-365-2 career record halfway through his 22nd season.
Notes on Bloomsburg
-It's been a frustrating start to the season for the Huskies, who have only played three games, despite having 17 scheduled, due to postponements or cancellations.
-Bloomsburg's season-opening game was supposed to come on Feb. 23, but didn't happen until this past Saturday, March 9, a 1-2 loss to West Liberty University. The Huskies (1-2) then got two more games in the next day as they split with West Virginia State University, losing 1-4 in the first game before pulling out the 3-1 victory in the second for their first one of the season.
-Now, Bloomsburg will travel to Harrogate, Tenn., for its first game versus LMU here and just the second-ever matchup between the two squads. The only other time the Lady Railsplitters faced the Huskies was two years ago on a neutral field, where LMU cruised to a 17-1 win in Hartsville, S.C.
-Through those three games, freshman Danielle Barnes is leading the pack with a .333 batting average after going 2-for-6 at the plate. Sammi Starr, a freshman, took advantage of her opportunity, belting the team's lone home run in one of her two at-bats.
-Abby Wild impressed in her two appearances, allowing just one run on five hits through seven innings with seven strikeouts, which equals a 0.00 ERA.
Notes on Lees-McRae
-This doubleheader was originally scheduled for March 3, but was moved due to wintry conditions, and then it was moved again from the rescheduled date of March 17 to this Wednesday, March 13.
- Since 1999, these two teams have played 12 games and this doubleheader will be the first-ever to be hosted at Lees-McRae. All have been played in Harrogate, Tenn., as the Lady Railsplitters own the 9-3 series record and have won the last five.
-The Bobcats (5-5) come into this matchup having faced all SAC teams, which the Lady Railsplitters will see later in the year, minus a pair of games versus Lander and a doubleheader against Young Harris Monday.
-Lees-McRae dropped doubleheaders at Anderson and Lenoir-Rhyne to open the season before picking up its first two wins in a doubleheader sweep of Tusculum, 3-1 and 2-1, Feb. 26. The Bobcats swept Mars Hill at the Bearcat Round Robin and split with Lander ahead of their matchup with the Mountain Lions, who the Lady Railsplitters split with earlier in the season.
-As a team, Lees-McRae is hitting .264 after going 73-for-277 at the plate with 31 runs scored, 15 doubles, six home runs, 29 RBI, 16 walks, six hit-by-pitches and a .316 on-base-percentage.
-In all 10 games played, the Bobcats have three players — Caitlyn Ray, Julie Gast and Faith Cooke — who are hitting over .300. Gast paces the pack with a .343 batting average, five RBI, three doubles two stolen bases, while Ray is .324 at the plate with three doubles, a home run and four RBI and Cookie is hitting .323 with a double, home run, five RBI and two walks.
-In the circle, ahead of the Young Harris doubleheader, Kara Cunningham (33.1 IP, 1.89 ERA) leads by example for freshman Skylar Edwards (21.1 IP, 2.30 ERA). Cunningham (2-3) has 33 strikeouts while Edwards (1-2) has 13.
