FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Lincoln Memorial's women's lacrosse team will step out of conference for a mid-week game against winless Emmanuel College on Tuesday in Franklin Springs, Ga. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
LMU (8-2, 3-1 SAC) is coming off an impressive 13-2 win over conference rival Catawba last Saturday. The win tied the program record for wins in a season and put the Lady Railsplitters just one game behind league-leading Queens University in the conference standings. Emmanuel is coming into the contest winless in five games with its latest loss coming via forfeit to Mount Olive last week.
Head coach
Caitlyn Corace will be bringing her team into the game on a two-game winning streak. LMU has featured a balanced scoring attack and stingy defense led by the latest South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Defensive Player of the Week,
Zoe Zervos, and goalie
Micayla Starnes.
"Zoe has been a workhorse for us on defense all season," Corace said. "I am glad that she was able to get some conference recognition for her efforts on the field."
Starnes has been a rock in goal for LMU, dropping her goals against average to 9.30 after yielding only two goals against Catawba. She ranks among the South Atlantic Conference leaders in saves (89) and save percentage (48.9%). Additionally, she has been a catalyst for the offense with her ball handling in transition.
Against Emmanuel, Corace is looking for another fast start and the same focus the team showed against Catawba.
"We just had the conversation about staying sharp," Corace said at the close of practice on Monday. "We have a four-hour bus ride tomorrow and then we play. I told them the focus has to be playing our game. If we worry about us and what we can control that will be the difference maker in any game.
"We reiterated to them that we are going there to play our game, handle our business and not be distracted by anything else."
Offensively, the Lady Railsplitters have seen a balanced scoring attack led by attacker
Erin DePaul, the team leader in goals with 34. The Elkton, Md., sophomore is also among the SAC leaders in scoring, ranking fourth in goals, third in points (43) and third in shots (75).
Kelly Csenar, coming off a four-goal effort against Catawba, is second on the team with 24 goals, followed by
Amara Moss (21),
Kennedy Buechner (13) and
Jasmin Click and Kelly Casey (11 each).
"It's amazing to see the growth in the program and the buy-in from everybody," Corace said. "Bringing in the right people, playing the right way and doing things that have been beneficial to the program, it is nice to see the progress.
"Since my first day here five years ago our goal has been about making the conference tournament and making some noise there," Corace continued. "Our goal is to make the conference tournament year in and year out. For now we are taking each game day-by-day, get the job done and play LMU lacrosse."
