HARROGATE, Tenn. – The 18th-ranked Wingate Bulldogs used a 13-0 run to overpower the Railsplitters 18-7 in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the LMU Lacrosse Complex.
Lincoln Memorial (3-8, 1-4 SAC) drew level with the Bulldogs (7-3, 3-1 SAC) and scored their first goal of the match with 53 seconds left in the opening quarter, but Wingate scored with three seconds remaining in the opening frame to kick-start a 13-0 flurry that carried into the third quarter.
That run, which was highlighted by an 8-0 second quarter, put the Bulldogs in command 14-1 midway through the third quarter.
Chris Tucker halted the 13-0 binge at the 6:54 mark of the third, but Wingate added two more goals early in the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 16-2.
The Railsplitters closed out the match on a 5-2 spurt to whittle the final deficit down to 11 goals.
Wingate dominated nearly every phase of the match, outshooting Lincoln Memorial 55-23, including a massive 38-13 edge in shots on goal. The Railsplitters mustered just six total shots on goal through the first three quarters before landing seven on frame in the fourth.
The Bulldogs also went 16-for-17 on clears, won 17 of the 27 face-offs and snagged a decisive 46-22 advantage in groundball recoveries.
Joe Conklin led the Railsplitters with two goals and an assist, while
Ian Cook and
Chris Tucker chipped in two goals apiece.
Reggie Golfin notched the only other goal of the game for LMU, while
Robert Tucker,
Kyle Arcuri,
Will Britt and
Craig Settles had an assist each.
Goalie
Trenton Cameron matched a season-high mark by facing 53 shots, made a season-high 19 saves, which are tied for the second-most in program history, and allowed a season-high 17 goals over 55 minutes of work.
Six different players had multiple goals for Wingate, led by Dominic Piazza's four goals. Bobby Padden had two goals and five assists, while Conor Gronbach posted two goals and three assists. Ryan Ormerod, Mark Taccard and Matt Calleri added two goals apiece.
The Railsplitters are back in action on Saturday, April 6 when the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears come to town for the regular-season home finale. That match is set for a 4 p.m. start.
