Pioneers Pull Away Late To Down LMU 73-59

Sydney Newsome led LMU with career-high 22 points

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tusculum Pioneers broke open what had been a close game and survived a late rally by LMU to hold on for the 73-59 South Atlantic Conference victory Wednesday evening in Pioneer Arena. The loss overshadows a career night from LMU's Sidney Newsome, who poured in 22 points and had a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lady Railsplitters are now 6-9 overall and 5-6 in SAC play, while the Pioneers improve to 14-3 overall and 9-2 in SAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• LMU scored first off a layup by Newsome. The Pioneers tied up the game soon afterward, but LMU then rolled out to take a 9-4 lead.
• The teams traded possessions at a fast pace as Tusculum went on an 11-2 run to close out the quarter.
• LMU reclaimed the lead as Lauren Flowers hit a driving layup to put LMU ahead 17-15. The Pioneers then scored seven unanswered points to go ahead by five. Shermeria Quarles would close out the half with a jumper to cut the lead to 26-24.
• Tusculum opened up the third quarter on a 12-2 run. A Lexi Kiser layup then sparked a 9-0 LMU run.
• The Pioneers then went on a run of their own to close the quarter with a 48-40 lead.
• The teams then traded baskets the rest of the game before TU hit 5-of-7 to close out the game and claim the 73-59 win.

KEY PLAYERS/STATS
• Newsome's 22 points are a new career high. She went 6-11 from the field and 9-11 from the free throw line.
Lauren Flowers chipped in 14 points and four assists.
• Sydney Wilson led TU with 27 points, while Jalia Arnwine added in 17. Kasey Johnson had 11 points and 11 rebounds while Maddie Sutton had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
• For the game, LMU shot 43.1 percent from the field, 15.4 percent from behind the arc, and 81.3 percent from the charity stripe.
• The Pioneers shot 39.3 percent from the field, 35.5 percent from three-point range and 70.0 percent from the free throw line.
• Tusculum out-rebounded LMU 42-26.

UP NEXT
LMU returns home to host Coker Saturday at 2 p.m. The Cobras are now 4-10 overall and 1-9 in SAC play after downing Newberry 62-50 earlier tonight.
