BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - The Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team improved to 3-1 Tuesday evening as they defeated Bluefield State 79-65 in non-conference action. The win gives the team positive momentum heading into a home game against conference foe UVA Wise this Saturday, Dec. 5.
Four players scored in double figures in the contest, and freshman 
Kassidy Kenny set a season-high with 12 points and 10 made free throws, helping the Lady Railsplitters salt away the road victory. LMU was excellent from the line as a team as they shot 22-27 overall.
LMU got off to a good start as leading scorer 
Lauren Flowers made a short jumper to give the Lady Railsplitters a 2-0 lead. After a free throws by the Big Blues, 
Lexi Kiser hit a three pointer to extend the lead to four. Bluefield State closed the lead to two, but a 
Maggie Jachimczuk layup, a 
Lindsay Proffitt three pointer, and a Flowers jumper stretched the lead out to nine less than halfway through the opening stanza. The Big Blues closed the lead to six, but Flowers and Kenny combined for four points to give LMU a 21-11 lead after one.
Bluefield State went on a 13-4 run to start the second quarter as LMU struggled to maintain their momentum from the first quarter. The Big Blues took the lead with a three pointer and the game stayed within a basket until halftime. A Kenny free throw closed out the scoring and gave the Lady Railsplitters a one point lead at halftime.
After the Big Blues scored the first five points of the second half, LMU dominated from then on out. An and-one by Flowers, a jumper by Kiser, a layup by Jachimczuk, and two Proffitt free throws extended the lead to five. Another Kiser three pointer gave the Lady Railsplitters an eight point lead before Bluefield State scored again. Consecutive Proffitt three pointers gave LMU a 12 point lead, and the lead stayed there until a Flowers jumper with ten seconds left stretched the lead to 61-47 after three.
An 11-3 run closed the lead to six with seven minutes to play, but LMU was able to withstand the late onslaught. Flowers, Kiser, and Kenny closed the game out, with Kenny hitting 5-6 free throws down the stretch to provide the final margin.
Four players scored in double figures as Flowers led with 21, shooting 5-5 from the free throw line. Proffitt made 4-8 three pointers and scored 18 points, while Kiser scored 17 and made 3-4 from three point range. Flowers and Proffitt tied for the team lead in rebounds as they each grabbed seven on the evening.
The Lady Railsplitters will look to continue the positive momentum in the home contest against UVA Wise this coming Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at B. Frank "Tex" Turner Arena.
