LMU Shoots Past Davenport to Mark First Victory of 2020 Season

Junior attack Ian Cook marks six goals and two assists to push LMU past Panthers on Wednesday morning

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University men's lacrosse program marked their first win of the season with a 19-11 victory at the LMU Soccer Complex on Wednesday morning against Davenport University.
 
RAILSPLITTER RUNDOWN
Junior attack Ian Cook got the Railsplitters going early after getting past Davenport University to tie the game at one-apiece at with 11:38 remaining in the first quarter with an assist from redshirt-senior midfielder Reggie Golfin. The Railsplitters and Panthers traded another goal after senior midfielder Chad Walters marked his first goal of the season.
 
After a Davenport penalty in the sixth-minute mark, Cook converted on the man-up opportunity with an assist from senior midfielder Robert Tucker with 5:36 remaining in the first quarter. Cook followed with another mark two minutes later after a dish from junior midfielder Nico Cicco led to another goal to take a 4-2 lead ending into the second quarter of action.
 
Davenport opened the second quarter with a goal to shrink the deficit by Jordan Caskenette in 22 seconds from the face-off. The Railsplitters responded with a pair of goals from Tucker (14:07) and freshman attack Sam Skousen (12:56) to increase the lead to 6-3. Over the next eight minutes, Davenport put together a third-goal rally to eliminate the deficit with four minutes remaining in the first half. Tucker scooped up a ground ball after a Cook shot at goal to take back the lead and close out the half on top, 7-6.
 
The Railsplitters caught another rally expanding from the 13-minute mark of the third quarter and into the 10-minute mark of the final quarter, recording nine-straight goals to compile a 16-7 lead with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Over the span of the rally; Cook and Skousen notched three goals and Golfin, Chris Tucker and Robert Tucker recorded a goal apiece.
 
Another three-straight-goal sequence started two minutes later to cap the game with 19 goals on the morning, leading to a 19-11 victory.
 
THE KEEPERS:
 
DVPT – Daniel Milano marked 11 saves on facing 30 shots throughout the day against LMU, recording 19 goals against.  
LMU – Freshman Jacob Brown logged 55 minutes today in between the pipes for the Railsplitters tallied a dozen saves and eight goals-against on the day before senior Trenton Cameron finished the game, allowing three-final Panther goals.
 
TEAM STATS:
The Railsplitters lead the way in shots (41-36), face-offs won (31-13) and clears (20-16) thoughout the day against Davenport.
 
LMU LEADERS:
  • Cook led the Railsplitters recording six goals, two assists on eight total shots and a caused turnover.
  • Robert Tucker contributed with four goals, three assists on eight shots with four ground balls.
  • Skousen tallied four goals, one assist and scooped up a pair of ground balls throughout the contest for the Railsplitters.
  • Chris Tucker added a pair of goals and four assists and a ground ball.
  • Senior face-off/midfielder Hunter Clark ran the show in face-offs after converting on 12-of-14 with seven ground balls.
  • Freshman face-off/midfielder William Johns notched nine face-off victories and tallied six ground balls for the Blue and Gray.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Today's contest between LMU and Davenport University marks the first-ever meeting between the two squads. LMU starts off in the win column (1-0) in head-to-head competition.

LMU looks to stay at home in Harrogate to host Palm Beach Atlantic University on Tuesday, Mar. 3, at 4:00 p.m., at the LMU Soccer Complex. The Railsplitters and Sailfish will meet for the second time next week. LMU currently sits 1-0 against the Sailfish.
