Railsplitters' Sam Skousen Calls Game with Goal in Final Two Seconds

Junior attack Ian Cook rips for seven goals, Skousen scores late to secure victory over Palm Beach Atlantic University

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Lincoln Memorial University men's lacrosse freshman midfielder Sam Skousen netted a goal with two seconds remaining to clinch an electric victory over Palm Beach Atlantic University on Tuesday evening at Union College.
 
RAILSPLITTER RUNDOWN:
Junior attack Ian Cook got the Railsplitters on the board early as he shot by PBA for a 1-0 lead just 43 seconds into the contest. The Sailfish then responded with a four-goal run over the next 8:25 to gain a 4-1 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Cook then found the back of the net again after a dish from junior attack Chris Tucker just two minutes later. The Sailfish tacked on more goal to conclude the first quarter with a 5-2 lead.
 
Senior midfielder Robert Tucker started out the second quarter with a pair of dishes to Chris Tucker on an extra-man opportunity and redshirt-senior midfielder Reggie Golfin to bring the count within one goal at 10:23 remaining in the second quarter. PBA then went on another three-goal run to extend to deficit to four for the Railsplitters (8-4).
 
Cook came back with a pair of goals within the span of 57 seconds to shrink the Sailfish lead just shy of seven minutes remaining in the opening half. The Railsplitters then rallied with four straight goals coming from sophomore midfielder Joe Conklin, Chris Tucker, Skousen and Robert Tucker to take the lead in the third quarter with eight minutes remaining. PBA's Henry Sloyan tacked on a goal right before the end of the quarter to even the count at 10-10 heading into the fourth.
 
The Blue and Gray then put together a four-goal run started by Robert Tucker and then proceeded with a quick-hat trick by Cook within 74 ticks of the clock to give the Railsplitters a 14-10 lead with just shy of 12 minutes remaining. The visiting Sailfish then responded with a four-goal run of their own to even the count once again at 14-14 with 1:01 remaining in play.
 
SKOUSEN CALLS GAME:
Sam Skousen was found on the weak side of the field with a wide-open path to goal and ripping a shot in between the legs of the Sailfish goalkeeper with just two seconds remaining to clinch the victory for the Railsplitters.
 
THE KEEPERS:
PBA – Freshman goalie Lee Rowden marked eight saves and had 15 goals against on the evening against the Railsplitters.
LMU – Freshman goalie Jacob Brown had 14 goals against in 60 minutes of play and tallied 13 saves for the Blue and Gray.
 
TEAM STATS:
LMU took the edge in faceoff victories (18-12), groundballs (32-31) and successful clears (24-23).
 
LMU LEADERS:
Cook counted for seven goals on a dozen shots and scooped a groundball. Today's contest marks the second-straight game for Cook scoring six-plus goals.
 
Chris Tucker chipped in a pair of goals and pair of assists with a ground ball on the evening for the Railsplitters.
 
Robert Tucker contributed with a pair of goals and assists as well. The midfielder picked up four ground balls and recorded a caused turnover.
 
Skousen marked two goals on the evening, the first coming as time expired in the first half of play to tie the game at the break and the second notched the win for the Railsplitters with two seconds remaining. In addition, the midfielder tacked on an assist and a groundball.
 
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
After tonight's last-second victory, the Railsplitters take a 2-0 all-time head-to-head lead over the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University.

The Railsplitters will look to extend their winning streak to three as they open conference at no. 17 Wingate University this upcoming Saturday, Mar. 4, at 1:00 p.m., in Wingate, North Carolina.
