WINGATE, N.C. - Coming off a huge win over #10 Carson-Newman at home, the Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team looked to continue their positive momentum Saturday afternoon. A Peyton Davis jumper and a Bryanna Troutman layup gave Wingate a 6-0 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the period. Both teams were cold for the next three minutes; then
Mikayla Kuehne scored LMU's first basket of the game. After another Saylor layup,
Lindsay Proffitt made her first three pointer of the afternoon to get the Lady Railsplitters within three. Aliyah Whiteside and Kuehne then traded threes. After two Bulldog free throws,
Jordan Maney score and
Lauren Flowers hit a three just before the first quarter buzzer to tie the score at 13 heading into the second period.
Once again, neither team was able to score early in the quarter until two Saylor free throws. A
Lexi Kiser three gave LMU their first lead of the contest before Troutman responded with a layup. Later, A Haleigh Hatfield three extended the Wingate lead to four before Kuehne and Davis traded layups. Maney and Kuehne then made threes to re-take the lead for the Lady Railsplitters. After another Troutman layup, Flowers made a three to extend the lead to three. Two Davis free throws, a Troutman layup, and a Jaia Wilson three pointer gave the Bulldogs the lead back, but Flowers responded with her third three pointer of the contest. A Troutman layup off an offensive rebounds closed the scoring and sent LMU into the locker room down three.
Saylor started the scoring for the third straight quarter with a layup, but Flowers was able to respond with one of her own. Davis and Saylor then made baskets to give Wingate their largest lead of the game at seven points. Wilson made a three to stretch that lead to 10; then, Maney responded with a layup. Troutman asserted her presence down low and scored once again, but Kuehne and Proffitt made threes to cut the lead to four halfway through the period. After an Ashley Breindl basket, Proffitt made another three to get the Lady Railsplitters within three. Four more points by the Bulldogs put them ahead by seven, but Flowers made a three to cut the lead back to four. The teams then traded baskets, with the scoring capped off by a Kiser three to make the score 55-50 going into the final quarter.Â
Wingate scored twice to quickly extend their lead to nine, but Kuehne hit another from long range. However, the Bulldogs responded with an Aliyah Whiteside thre. Two Flowers free throws cut the lead to seven, but Troutman scored yet again. A Proffitt three pointer predicated two free throws from each team before another Proffitt three cut the lead to one possession. A Troutman and-one extended the Wingate lead once again, and Flowers made a layup. After a Wilson layup and a Kiser three pointer, the Bulldogs outscored LMU 8-0 to end the game and win by double digits.
Flowers led the Lady Railsplitter charge with 21 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals, making four threes for a season-high. Kuehne had 16 points and led the team with eight rebounds, while Proffitt finished with 15 points.
